This independent film lab will provide a five-day long intensive in an idyllic setting in Chatham, New York, to refine and perfect your screenplay. Room and board will be included. The influence of a new generation of filmmaking, the web, the change in platform viewing, the difficulty in finding finance and the need for succinct and powerful storytellers is forcing the industry to take notice of the short film. In at least a first draft stage, screenplays will be worked on with the intention of sharpening them and making them into an eight to fifteen page short while focusing on a three-act structure. Completion could then be easily filmed and used as a trailer or final product. Each day provides work time, lab time and guest speaker. Both feature length and already established short formats will be considered.
One finished short screenplay within the Lab will be given a script reading at the FilmColumbia Festival, October 17-21, with a $500 cash award towards the filming project. FilmColumbia Festival screens pre-released major independent and award winning films, some going on to major acclaim. In 2011, The Artist, Kid with a Bike, My Week With Marilyn, Anonymous, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Melancholia, Bully, Pariah and A Dangerous Method were among the screenings.
The lab will be facilitated by actor Scott Cohen(The Other Woman,Kissing Jessica Stein, Necessary Roughness) and screenwriter/playwright Anastasia Traina(Horton Bliss, Sparticles and String, From Riverdale to Riverhead) . Guest speakers may include John Orloff (A Mighty Heart, Anonymous), Michael Cristofer (The Witches of East wick, The Bonfire of the Vanities, Cassanova), Courtney Hunt (Frozen River, In Treatment), Marc Levin (White Boyz), Seth Zvi Rosenfeld (Sunset Park, King of the Jungle), Frank Pugliese (Street Time) and writer Peter Biskind, (Easy Riders, Raging Bull, Star: How Warren Beatty Seduced America).
