Objective

The Vancouver Filmworks Screenplay Competition is a global screenwriting contest dedicated to inspire, support, and discover innovative narrative storytellers in film and television. Our objective is to launch careers, provide recognition and facilitate networking opportunities for the best new original voices in screenwriting.

We welcome screenplays from anywhere in the world.

Four Categories:

  • SHORT FILM
  • ORIGINAL HALF HOUR TELEPLAY
  • ORIGINAL ONE HOUR TELEPLAY
  • FEATURE FILM

Six Genres:

  • ACTION/ADVENTURE
  • COMEDY
  • CRIME/THRILLER
  • DRAMA
  • HORROR
  • SCIENCE FICTION/FANTASY

The Vancouver Filmworks Screenplay Contest awards its winners with cash, prizes, sponsorship packages, and pitch meetings with leading industry professionals.

Rules

No entrant may have earned money or other consideration as a screenwriter for theatrical films or television, or for the sale of, or sale of an option to, any original story, treatment, screenplay, or teleplay for more than $5,000.

Entrants must be 18 years or older to enter the contest. Misrepresentation of age, upon discovery by Vancouver Filmworks, will disqualify the applicable entrant.

The rights to the submitted screenplay should not have been previously optioned or sold.

Employees of Vancouver Filmworks and its affiliated companies and their immediate families are not eligible. Screenplay submissions should beA in the U.S. Motion Picture industry standard screenplay format. Submissions should be written in the English language. All submissions must be in PDF format and delivered electronically.

  • Original Short Film: Up to 40 pages
  • Original Half Hour Teleplay: Half hour format up to 40 pages (including supplementary materials)
  • Original One Hour Teleplay: One hour format between 41 and 80 pages (including supplementary materials)
  • Feature Film: Between 41 and 140 pages

Screenplay submissions must be the original work of the applicant and may not be based, in whole or in part, on any other fictional or non-fictional material, published or unpublished, produced or unproduced for which the writer does not have rights, excepting those works that are in the public domain.

Awards

A total of $12,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winners this year.

The Grand Prize winner will receive $5,000 in cash, round trip travel, 2 VIP Passes and two nights hotel accommodations at the Vancouver Hilton for. All screenplays from each genre and category will be eligible for consideration.

The winners of the Short Film, Original Half Hour Teleplay, Original One Hour Teleplay, Feature Film categories will each receive $1,000 in cash, 2 VIP Passes and two nights hotel accommodations at the Vancouver Hilton for the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenwriter Conference in Vancouver, WA (Saturday July 2, 2016). All screenplays from each genre will be eligible for consideration.

The winners of the ACTION/ADVENTURE, COMEDY, CRIME/THRILLER, DRAMA, HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION/FANTASY genre will each receive $500 in cash, 2 VIP Passes and two nights hotel accommodations at the Vancouver Hilton for the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenwriter Conference in Vancouver, WA (Saturday July 2, 2016). All screenplays from each category will be eligible for consideration.

Winners and Official Finalists of the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenplay Competition will be contacted by June 1, 2016. Awards will be presented at the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenwriter Conference in Vancouver, WA (Saturday July 2, 2016).

The top three screenwriters in each category and genre will receive prize packages that include Conference Passes good for all workshops, seminars, and parties at the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenwriter Conference in Vancouver, Washington (Saturday July 2, 2016)

The top three screenwriters in each category and genre will receive merchandise from the Vancouver Filmworks Gear Store (T-shirts, beanies, etc.).

The top three screenwriters in each category and genre will receive written recognition on the Vancouver Filmworks Screenplay Competition website.

The top three screenwriters in each category and genre will be included in the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenwriter Conference program which is distributed to industry professionals in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and Vancouver year round.

The Grand Prize winner and top three screenwriters in each category and genre will be included in the 2016 Vancouver Filmworks Screenwriter Conference press release to Variety, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times, The Oregonian and The Columbian.
