Objective

Sports stories inspire audiences with hope for success in a world full of endless challenges. As the world could always use more hope, the Sports Script Championship, presented by Houston International Sports Film Fest and Event Horizon Films, works to drive more attention to sports stories in Hollywood by recognizing the unsung writers of these inspiring scripts.

In true sports fashion, advancing scripts will go head to head in a tournament bracket until one writer is named champion. The earlier the submission, the higher the seed.

From sports bio-pics and sports family to sports comedy and sports drama, the Sports Script Championship is now accepting shorts, pilots and feature screenplays that involve any sports setting, athlete or competitive event. Show More

Sports Screenplay Championship Names Contest Winners

The International Sports Film Festival in Houston has named The Last Indian War by Michael Graf as the winner of their Sports Screenplay Championship.

GOLD
The Last Indian War
By Michael Graf (Madison, WI)

THE LAST INDIAN WAR is the inspirational true-life story about how a group of Native American children kidnapped by the US Army overcome incredible adversity and racism to play one of the greatest championship football games ever played - against the very group responsible for their kidnapping.

SILVER
An American Game
By Glen Gonzalez (Florida) and Tim Register (Florida)

A ruthless Confederate captain is reassigned to a remote post where his last chance to defeat the Union enemy comes on the baseball field.

BRONZE
Legacy
By Rebekah E. Reaves (Houston, TX)

The daughter of a renowned football coach must overcome the shadow of her father’s legacy as she pursues her goal of winning a college championship as the first female football coach in the country.

The Screenplay Championship is dedicated to helping emerging sports writers break into the industry. Each script was judged by readers from the industry’s top talent agencies and management companies during the preliminary rounds, giving sports writers the added value of high-profile industry experts reviewing and critiquing their work. The winning script was selected by Darryl Poniscan, who is an award-winning screenwriter responsible for Vision Quest, a wrestling movie starring Emmy-nominee Matthew Modine and BAFTA-nominee Linda Fiorentino. He was also responsible for Cinderella Liberty, starring Oscar-nominees’ James Caan and Marsha Mason, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best screenplay.
