An interview with screenwriter Karen Webb regarding the Vail Film Festival Writing Competition.
Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?A: Green Grass - The grass is always greener; or is it? An illegal immigrant and an Irish-American, two competing landscapers, face a moral dilemma as they fight to do the right thing for their families.
It's about two landscapers, one Brazilian illegal and one Irish-American, and the illegal immigration issue. When I wrote the script, I wanted to show the human side of the immigration issue, not the political side, and show the impact that this issue has had on families on both sides.
A: Quite simply, Vail has a good reputation, and I had never skiied out west before, so I entered two scripts into Vail. My other script was a finalist as well but did not place. That script, Arthur's Salvation, is now a finalist in Moondance.
Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?A: Yes, the Vail Film Festival is a very well run festival. I also attended the festival to pick up the award, and I was impressed with how well it was managed.
Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?A: I received feedback from my writer's group, but I didn't receive feedback from the festival. I would have found it helpful, as the feedback from my writer's group helped quite a bit.
Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?A: I was contacted by one director in LA, but I had decided that I wanted to produce this script myself. We are in production, with one more day of photography to go. Visit the film's website - www.greengrassfilm.com.
Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?A: I have written several scripts. I am about to option a full-length feature romantic comedy.
Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?A: No, I live outside Boston, and I do not have any plans to move to LA.
Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?A: I'm always working on scripts. I have two that I'd like to finish before the end of the summer. Oh, and I'm in production with Green Grass, so I'll be working with the crew on getting that ready to submit to Sundance and other festivals, including Vail (wouldn't it be cool to have a script that won an award come back the following year as a film?)
