Somewhere on this board awhile ago I suggested that we all pool our money together to make our own movies. Check out this site:

I'm familiar with this site and several others.
The only problem with people as a group pooling their money and choosing a script is that each person usually feels that their script is the one that should be made.
I have a prospectus (which I spent time shortening and now I have to make longer because the attorney said it should be about 40 pages) for one of my own scripts.
I've got a meeting scheduled to work with like-minded individuals. Although I've been on 2 film-related boards, I've found that not everyone feels that funding films should be a top priority. So, instead of trying to change peoples minds, I'm searching for those who think the same way.
Too many indie films are very expensive Hallmark Movies. There's nothing wrong with a Hallmark movie. The only problem is it probably won't recoup the expenses. People usually won't pay for a movie they can see on tv for free.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, I'll keep you posted.

I believe that would be a good way to go actually. Someone would have to choose the script, but as an economic major in college in makes sense to pool resources and purchase shares

Since when is making movies anything at all about making sense?

Well, first of all without risk there is no reward. Secondly, if you can finance a project yourself, you can make a shit load of money outside of the hollywood system. Look at Tyler Perry. His movies do like 30 million a picture but he makes a ton of money. How? Because he is able to self finance, thereby he can dictate the best terms. The man made 125 million dollars last year alone. It has been done and is currently done.
