US Film School Professor to Speak at ScriptBiz

PROVIDENCE, RI (June 24, 2000) — Everyone has a story to tell, says USC film school professor Richard Krevolin. But being able to tell it well, to write it down in such a way that others want to pay for the privilege of seeing it on the big screen, is indeed a rare occurrence.

According to Krevolin, screenwriting is not just an art and a craft, it is a business. "No matter how well you write, you cannot afford to be a pure artiste, sitting in your loft, chain-smoking and looking down upon the rest of us with disdain. You have to be able to sell yourself on the page, on the phone, and in person."

Based upon his best-selling book, Screenwriting From The Soul, Krevolin will lead a 3-hour lecture at ScriptBiz™, the one-day screenwriting seminar and marketplace created and presented by the Rhode Island International Film Festi val on Saturday, August 12. Krevolin will also conduct a special "Advanced Screenwriting Developmental Workshop."

A graduate of Yale University, Krevolin earned his masters degree in screenwriting at UCLA's School of Cinema-Television, and a master's degree in playwriting and fiction from USC. To his credit, Krevolin has several screenplays under option and in development, and was a finalist for the $500,000 Kingman Screenwriting Award and the Nicholl Fellowship Screenwriting Award.

"A good story should grab the reader immediately and keep him or her turning the page," says Krevolin. "Every development person in Hollywood has stacks of screenplays to get through and is dying to find a reason not to finish yours. Don't give them one."

Krevolin's "Screenwriting From The Soul" lecture will be held from 9AM-12 noon on Saturday, August 12 at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Providence. General admission is $25.00. "Advanced Screenwriting Developmental Workshop" will be held from 1 PM-4 PM and is limited to 12 participants. The workshop costs $75.00.

The ScriptBiz™ program also features a "Selling to Hollywood" panel discussion , script consultations, pitching sessions and roundtable discussions on The Art of Pitching, Do I Need an Agent?, The Development Deal and What Script Readers Want. For more information on ScriptBiz, contact Eleyne Austen Sharp, Program Manager, at (401) 861-4445 or see the website at www.film-festival.org.
