Not to brag, but I got a "consider" from a script consultant...also gave the script to someone (who has experience making shorts) who was not familiar with the piece....He too said it was great.....got great recommends from 2 persons who read it on Zoetrope...so after reading the posts here...I really feel good about my work....

I know that I am a newby here....BUT...I made the Quarterfinals too...This was my first try at a contest....My script was "EL CUBANO"...good luck to all of you...

Connie..if this can be a source if comfort.....about 20 years ago I had a terrible accident...I feel at work...For several hours after I wandered around..not know just where I was or what was going on...I lost my speech..my memory...and thinking...for the next 18 months I had to teach myself to read...remember speak...I have been there...I know how you feel...I have been there..for me to actually write and be recognized is an accomplishment that I treasure more than most people....If I can lend a few words of encouragement..please let me...Good Luck in what you chose to do...

Thanks Jean...as you can see I still tend to get ahead of myself when I type...(You can imagine the amount of corrections I have to do)...At the time of my accident I read sometimes 2 books a week, or more....I read all the time....no one can imagine what it is like to have to start at a 3rd grade level and work your way up....I had to write on a slip of paper everything I wanted to remember or I would forget...Would go into a grocery store and forget what I was there to buy...I drove my car one day...and got lost...a quick trip took me over 2 hours and I was only a few blocks from home...Yet I never gave up...I hope Connie hangs in there....

I too have gotten conflicting advice from 3 critiques. It was interesting that none of them had mentioned the same thing needed fixing...It is almost like they wanted to take the story and change it to what they would write... I also found the the subject was not familiar with at least one of them by the comments they made....Have any of you encountered that same problem?

I'm a new kid on the block...but I find the suggestions to be top notch..and the congrats are always there for everyone....A true inspiration to us all....

I find the best time to write is anytime and anywhere...I keep a note pad with me and have been told I should put it away when I am out in Public...but do you know how many strange things people do when they are eating? or at doctor's office?...or in a grocery store?

If I write at night, I #1..send my husband to bed.. #2 feed the cat.. #3 close the door to my office or my husband will get up and he and the cat will come in to see what I am doing..

My cat will climb on the computer table and try to help me type...and my husband?

sorry for the error....I should have said Quarters...but the way some folks were crying...I thought it was the end of the world...they were comparing what the letters said....but seems they were all the same....thanks but no cigar....

I still hope that some of the writers here make it...It is nice to see good people get success.. Perhaps it can fall on more of us....

Am lucky to have the opportunity to read "Lady Jazz".....What a script!!!! It is eveything I hoped it to be....WOW....If someone does not pick this up...they are such fools...It brings back the memories of when films were films...Great story...Great dialogue....You can actually SMELL the cigarette smoke...You can HEAR the music..You can see the action...The Characters are so real...

Jean has done an excellent job of bringing the story to life....

SOMEONE out there PLEASE...make this into a film so everyone can enjoy it...

Sorry Janet....but IT IS A STORY....and it is not a piece on the Criminal Justice system.....I read the script. Anyone liking Jazz will love it...and her characters are well-written...She's done her research well......MORE than in a lot of scripts that I have read...where NO RESEARCH has been done at all..and it shows...

What about the Black soldiers in the Civil War? The Buffalo Soldiers in the Western United States....the Black soldiers who remained in Europe after they served in WWI? Were they not the ones who perked the interest in Jazz in Paris? Didn't Josephine Baker leave the US and became a hit in Paris?

I did not mean for my comment to become such a conversation piece...BUT...It sure has peaked an interest in LADY JAZZ...

Having been a past member of a screenwritng group for abt 8 years where we read and commented on each others scripts....the older writers most always had better scripts...Their ideas were more developed..their characters more interesting...AND they placed in more contests...

The younger writers main subjects were either Horror or SCI FI...with underdeveloped characters...plot holes and other problems...

A great story takes research..time and energy...that is what makes it so great..

So here's to the older writer...

Have you tried American Zoetrope? The main screenwriting board can get political at times...but

1. you can review other scripts... 2. post one of your own for peer review.... 3. Establish private comment rooms for you invited friends....

There are some truly wonderful folks there to help you..There are award winning contest writers there too.

Check it out...it may not be for you...but it is another place to converse about writing...to exchange ideas...

Do I write MOMENTS EARLIER as A "SUPER" ? OR just DISSOLVE TO as a transition?

Joseph.....that's the Phoenix area, right on the nose....

That's why I use the internet option whenever I can and avoid all the fun you find in the offices...Sit there half a day and you have at least 5 screenplays an hour.

OR try the ER....NOW there are some really interesting screenplay ideas..OR find someone who works in an ER and will tell your what REALLY goes on and you will never go to one again...

As a female rape victim, I TOO am tired of men writing about something they know nothing about...axcept being the one doing the raping and telling the woman either "I know you liked it"...or "Get over it".....The torment, shame, guilt... that goes on for years...is something NO MAN can understand....

Write about a MAN raping a male....and let us females know what it is like...Let us know if "Did you like it?'...or "I know you wanted it"...or the famous "Get over it"...

Putting a script out there is a scarey feeling....BUT....Barb is the greatest....she will slash you...but she has been there and knows her stuff....she only wants you to succeed....

I have Blue Cat twice...both times felt the reviews were fair. Last year I made the QuarterFinals and was very pleased.

The suggestions that were made on how to impove the script were areas that I thought a reader would understand, but didn't.

Both times the reader had read the entire script due to the areas that they had pointed out . The fact that the critique is included with the entry fee, it is worth it.

I made the Quarter Finals last year in BLUECAT...it was my first try with "EL CUBANO".. in fact, my first real script that I have ever submitted....I found the critiqe to be well written...I am sorry that some of you have had bad luck...

if you use Final Draft....they have a built-in .....have used it on a script I did with 2 other writers...worked pretty well.....
