Heather Hughes View This Topic Terry Rossio notes

I should add that this was a rewrite class. How HE would rewrite our scenes. During it he told us what he thinks when he reads a script. He was extremely humble and called himself a name I won't repeat here with reference to giving his opinions to us. He never said these were rules you have to follow.

With regard to being specific about ages he said if the age is important it should be in the dialog or action. He's all about saving space and I know from experience that studios often say, "Add these things and don't take out anything" You can only do that by cleverly making the most of every single space on the page. I've been told to get a script down by seven pages and not take out anything. So, I'm all about anything that saves space. My partner Kate is an absolute genius at this.

Paul you crack me up. Pilar vs Terry... They look so, so different. Man vs woman, big vs little, fair hair (Terry) vs dark, script consultant vs absolute god of screenwriting.

Haha, Paul. Good points. However, I will listen to Terry Rossio's rules. He's a screenwriting machine/hero!!!

Sleep well and I give you special dispensation to not follow any rules at all when it comes to writing

Heather Hughes View This Topic Terry Rossio notes

I got to attend a terrific lecture today with Terry Rossio. Here are a few of the notes.

- Use one space, not two, between sentences - it saves room
- 5 lines are the outer limit for a paragraph of description, unless it is an opening scene
- Don't use question marks (ie questions) in dialog "unless you have 10 reasons to so". You are forcing an actor to perform in a very specific way and it's limiting.
- For the most part it is amateurish to have one line of dialog cut off another character's line. It is tricky to get the timing right when filming
- Favorite screenplay - Body Heat
- Don't use "ing" words in description
- Never use bold type for any reason
- if you are describing a sign - center the words in the document so that they resemble a sign
- write out the words for numbers
- never specify an age over twenty. ie it's okay to say "the boy was twelve", but over that say, "In his thirties" not age thirty six
- capitalize crucial information that may get buried in a paragraph of description, but probably not more than twice in a script. You should only capitalize if the information is so crucial that if an exec missed that info he/she wouldn't understand the plot

What a great guy!

Hi everyone,

Let's try to meet in the Driskill bar at the end closest to the hotel lobby at 4:00 on Friday. Obviously, if anyone has a big producer begging them to sit down and talk just blow us off. I'm sure we'll see each other at the BBQ, but this way we can be sure to get together as a group. Maybe we can send Frederick a photo.

Sorry to be the traffic director, but I'm a producer, so what can I say?

Heather Hughes View This Topic why do you write screenplays?

It sounds like your daughters' career path has been really difficult for you. Writing screenplays is creative, challenging and addictive, so I can imagine why the continue. If supporting them is a strain on you it might be best to cut them off financially. All of us need to take responsibility for our own finances when we become adults and they should as well.

If you do cut them off financially then you might be better able to view their choice to continue as an adult decision that is theirs to make.

Good luck!

I guess I'm asking which scenes have a specific action, usually without dialog, that conveys a boatload of information.

The Sixth Sense realization is in the montage (is that right?). So it has very specific actions.

The Braveheart scene you mention Scott is exactly what I'm looking for. An action that conveys more than words could.

I just love the elegance of conveying so much with no dialog.

Love that example Scott! Paul was there a particular action that went along with the realization?

Heather Hughes View This Topic Most "informative" scene

Things are a little quiet around here so I thought I pose a question. What movie scene says the most with the least amount of dialog?

For me the two best are;

In "Unfaithful" when Diane Lane's character looks over at the snow globes and realized the one she gave her lover is back in her own home which means that her husband killed him.

and...

In "The Way Home", a Korean film, the little boy (who hated his grandmother when he was left with her at the beginning of the movie) threads a bunch of needles for her when he has to leave. His whole transformation is visible in that one act.

You???
