Is this an Urban Tale -- When Pulp Fiction and Taxi Driver made the rounds, the READERS hated it... is this true?

Could a Reader tell us why Readers in general don't like scripts like these.

Last question for the READER -- would any script from Spike Lee recieve rave CONSIDERATION...? eg. "DO THE RIGHT THING', it's a great script in my opinion!! But I have feeling READER might hate it.

Hoping to get some answers.

Hi, anyone heard anything from Lighthouse screenwriting contest 2007?

Did you get your feedback yet?

When is the results coming out?

Just worried they lost my script or forgot about me.

Thank you.

Thanks Terry. I'll use this for my Christmas friends get together when we play movie trivia.

The Great Santini, the movie, is a difficult watch. Some fathers are like that!

I think a remake is overdue.

I wish the did a version -- father and daughter/mother conflicts.

Thanks Jean,

Come to think of it I have applied to so many contests and when I do the math -- its expensive but worth it in the long run.

I hope Lighthouse Screenwriting Contest or someone out their with some connection or authority could help us out?

$50 dollar can be substantial to some and we all have to be honest and what goes around comes around.

Hoping that we all get the results and feedback.

Thank you.

Hey Randy,

I will see it soon.

Could you comment on the "set and custumes".

In the trailer, this threw me off. For some reason it did not look real.

Was this the case?

I thought the fashion in the movie was too "in your face and not right".

And in screenwriting for westerns, is the "fashion" a big part of the writing process?

Hey Randy,

When reading a Western style screenplay -- for eg. introducing the main characters for the first time and also introducing the wardrobe partially or a "very small" portion of it -- is this a good idea....

I think wardrobe and style is different for evey comboy/farmer/cowgirl/killer/postmaster....and a unique wardrobe gives one a unique character.

I don't write westerns but I do read them and my fav. is still "the proposition" and "the long riders".

Any input would be great.

Hey Randy,

Most likely Brad Pitt's new Jesse James epic will come out before Christmas. Rumors has it its will take out Yuma.

I will see both. But key players are betttttting for an Oscar for the long title epic -- Jesse James.

Can't wait to see Brad vs. Crowe at the Oscars. It will be a blast.

And lastly, I read Dances with Wolves, it was very descriptive, go figure?

Hi John Areends,

When attending a film festivals I tend to take off when the "party" or "socializing" start. The max I stay is 1/2 hour. It feels the producers and directors and seasoned TV writers(so many of them trying to cross over into features) are way smoother than me.

Any tips on "surviving" these "cocktails" get-together?

I don't like to drink, what is the best way to start a coversation at these "festival parties or get togethers"?

I'm currently looking for some coaching and books on this topic. I heard that it takes "guts" to go these parties if you're not a social butterfly.

I prefer the pitch festivals over these parties.

Thanks, any tips would help.

Hi Guy W,

I did not get my feedback yet from Lighthouse.

I emailed them so many times and they are not replying?

Do you have an email or contact name at Lighthouse?

Or could you ask them to contact me. I would greatlly appreciate it.

I worked hard to save up and to apply to their contest and feedback.

Why are they not giving me back my feedback.

Thank you.

Thanks Elaine.

I wish LIGHTHOUSE CONTEST would email all of us telling us about this "big" delay.

What happened to CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Anyway, thanks again Elaine for going the distance and helping us with this matter. Appreciated.

Just curious to know if others got their feedback.

Guy W, preceeding writer, got a feedback. But my friends and I never got our feedback.

So stressful.

Thanks

Hello Guy W.

I send two emails so far. No reply from Lighthouse.

Could you contact them and ask them about my feedback.

Which is easier to do -- writing a good novel or a good writing a good screenplay?

Please provide a quick answer.

Hey John,

Just frustrated and I'm thinking of quitting this business and going into film directing.

So what should I do?

Who is doing who and what is happening?

Hello D. Jay W

People are telling me its hard work but a good idea.

Just saw the new Sean Penn Movie Into the Wild.

First thing, what a script -- rule breaking and full of sublime "gimmicks".

But it works. The audience clapped at the end.

Just to prove it takes a great director to lead a novel into a great script.

I believe this movie will be nominated for some awards.

Hi Yara,

I'm meeting more writers everyday who are converting their novels into screenplays and some the other way around. In fact some are converting their novels and or screenplays into GRAPHIC NOVELS. Way to go!!!

I know one producer who buys the rights to tons of novels and then hire writers (with a decent pay!)to convert them into screenplays.

Writing can be fun and rewarding.

Thanks Yara.

I recently had the chance to pitch my script at a Pitch Festival and the producer asked me this question -- "do you write your script hoping the producer will make it and take it to the Cannes Film Festival and win BEST PICTURE??"...

What are some of the best and worst questions you ever got from producers/agents/managers etc. at PITCH FESTIVALS?

And as a contest, Script Savvy does a great job of respecting this by giving everyone a chance.

I think it's possible to sell a thriller noir.

Topic: Amy Winehouse and Screenwriting

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 02/11/08 12:31 PM

Readers are saying "NO" but I say YES and the producers are saying MAYBE.

I strongly believe that on an ACT 1 level, Amy Winehouse is a sympathetic character!

And wondering what are some of the best scripts/movies on drug addiction?

A character arc does not exist in 2008, its slowly becoming an urban myth....

We have accept this fact - will Amy, Britney, Ledger etc. -- dominate the neo-scripts of the future?

We want to learn more about these hurting souls....

BL

A while back a successful reader turned producer mentioned that AGENTS AND MANAGERS are notorious for throwing out up-opened query letters!!!!! Is this true? I heard that most popular AGENTS get over 1000 query letters per month!

Can an "INSIDER" or "INTERN" or "RECEPTIONIST" or "READER" or maybe even an actual "AGENT" or "MANAGER" comment on this. Maybe this is an urban myth? Just want to know the truth so we can re-focus on our marketing plan...

Cheers BL

Hi Everyone,

One thing I learned ON MOVIEBYTES BB is that developing "tought skin" is essential and part of making it in Hollywood but sometimes negative comments can really be painful and we should all "do the right thing"... It's a very very long marathon, this business.

As the music band REM said -- everyone hurts, sometimes...

Thanks again for the fantastic advice!!!

In the future I plan to re-structure my questions before posting.

Hey Ron,

Very timely and helpful.

Last week, I contacted an entertainment lawyer just to add the details to my business plan. I mentioned the proposal to him and he said his rate is $450.00 per hour and he cannot give me an estimate due to the complex nature of the topic.

On that note, I'm thinking of turning the character into a new "jungle hero" type and make it into a subplot and 100% unique.

Lastly, I learned a lot reading your posting on MB BB. Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for posting this.

Good question.

Maybe Gordy could come on this Bulletin and tells us -- how come adventure/action/gritty screenplays are not given a fair shake? Maybe they are? I don't know.

But I'm not getting a clear answer from Blue Cat.

Why not give action scripts a fair deal?

Blue Cat should have a category for action screenplays!! and hire readers with experiences reading scripts with heavy action...

If a script like "CRANK" or "SNATCH" or "DIE HARD" came to Gordy's desk -- what would readers say??

I think this is a fair question.

Topic: Writing Action/Thrilller Screenplays

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 03/08/08 11:42 AM

Slowly but surely, I'm seeing more contests and readers appreciating action/thriller scripts.

When I write, I'm trying to reduce the budget all the time(some contest and readers shy away from "high-concept/special effects" action scripts)! But others have no problem with it.

A contest provider told me they're looking for the next action/thriller on the level of Resevoir Dogs and Fargo.

Bottom line -- put some action and some thrills and a dark exciting storyline, we stand a chance.

Any good books on action screenwriting out there?

Hello Folks,

Just curious -- are animation screenplays popular? Are they being optioned?

OR do we have to write the "book/novel/story" first and then try to convert it into a screenplay after we develop a fan base?

Are producers searching for the next big animation screenplay via CONTESTS?

Since spec screenplays are moving into non-descrip. territory, then how is it possible to sell an animation script?

When selecting a screenplay competition to enter, what are the most important features that you look for?

Answer --

Who are the judges? Who are the readers? Who's involve in Admin? Are Admin reading the scripts? What proof will you provide to me that the screenplay was read?

When reviewing screenplay competitions, what causes you to eliminate a competition from consideration?

Answer --

Do they respect other genre? A good contest will respect all kinds of scripts -- thriller, horror, drama, comedy, historical, animation, family, urban, high-concept, western, experimental, romance etc.

Hope this helps.

Hello Gene and Supporters!!!

I think all screenplay contests should create a " detailed logline" or a "very very very short story summary" of the scripts they receive. It does not have to be a masterpiece -- but a good effort is all we ask....

This will give us proof that the script was actually read.

Some screenwriting contests are already doing this.

Hey Thomas, Patrick...

If you had to predict 30 years into the future -- what kind of screenwriting books would line the shelves ...

Regards,

BL

Help...I think hard copies is way to go, but I could be wrong!

Attention Readers/Producers/Script Contest Administrators!!!!!!

What do you prefer -- a hard copy or digital copy of the script?

Then how would you explain this -- all of the hottest/famous directors and producers in Hollywood love hard copies? They detest digital copies with a passion.

Please advise.

Are we being fooled.

I think a digital copy of a script get rejected 90% of the time.

I agree.

Yes it's a money game.

We all have to be careful how we budget/spend our hard earn cash.

Good points overall Thomas!! -- keep writing, read the classics, go to the library, watch the classics............

People don't really care -- they just want easy money.......

If Rob really cares, he would provide some free advice first and then within time --- writers will buy his book...

I have a business -- that's how it works -- you have to give and ask nothing in return -- and then within time you will make a sale....

Congrat !!! Evan Wright Menzel

This is fantastic news and this award will open doors for you and your bright future in writing and directing --

Just curious if you could share some of your writing/directing wisdom with us?

What advice would give to aspiring and upcoming screenwriters?

What are some of the other contests you applied to?

Saw "SHARP" -- very visual, was financing difficult? Should all screenwriter attempt to direct a short film?

As a director, what impresses you when you read a script?

What are some of your favourite movies?

Who are your favourite screenwriters in Hollywood?

Once again, Congrat!!!

Hey, d. santiago --

What was Steven's latest hit?

Why was this trailer "booooooed" at a recent showing after TROPIC THUNDER and THE LOVE GURU attained laugher paralysis.

The college/university crowd will not want to see INDY. Boring! That theme song depresses me.

Come on folks, Steve and George already made their money in the 80s. Forget about it.

This movie will go nowhere.

Regards,

BL

Hey Thomas,

That INDY(starring H. Ford) film, really depresses me.

I would sell my house any day to see TROPIC THUNDER or even Batman, The Dark Knight.

I feel like yelling. Why are we so caught up with this Indiana Jones, I don't get it!!!

Regards,

BL

Hey Thomas,

When B.E's "The Party", came out, it was a huge hit. Still now -- it's a cult move. The movie was "mild".

Love Guru is also mild humor. But brilliantly mild with very little hot pepper.

It's a great family, date movie.

It's going to be huge.

Can someone please try to answer this question....

This is really frustrating.

Or maybe it's a gamble -- digital or hard-copy?

Thanks Thomas and Orlando.

But I heard Nicholl script contest only wants hard copy? Is this true? Why?

This is driving my crazy.

Hi folks,

An upcoming screenwriter asked me read the script Sunset Boulevard and to learn from it.

I read it this afternoon and I got a splitting headache.

It's masterfully written, that is if I had a time machine.

But why are modern screenwriters raving about this script by Wilder?

Yes it's good but we are living into 2010...why should I enjoy this script....I did not?

Can someone tell me if I should read it over? Maybe I should read it with a good cup of coffee at Starbucks...

I'll try to read it over in September.

BL

Thank Greg,

You feedback on this topic really changed my plans.

I'm slowly learning that since we are moving into 2010, digital copies will be the norm.

Thanks

Producers want a script that's a PAGE-TURNER...

Yes, if you are writing suspense ONLY...

Maybe I'm wrong.

All the scripts I'm reading are well-written and entertaining in parts, but they are not PAGE-TURNERS...

Can someone actually tell me if they actually read a script in one sitting...and say "now that's what you call a PAGE TURNER...

Please list them, I would like to read them and learn from them...

Hi Folks,

Just heard, the marketing for SPEED RACER is in full force around the world. Everyone will be taking their friends/families/bosses etc. to see this movie. I bet on this. 100%.

I don't know about you but I can't back down with this prediction...

This movie will be the next big thing since THE MATRIX.

Can' wait to read the screenplay. Are there any samples/parts/first couple of pages on internet right now? For geg. The "W BROTHERS" are famous for describing a "deadly" complicated action scene in 4 sentence or less? Now that's the ticket!!!!!

I know CS magazine likes to print samples? Maybe next issue. Can't wait.

I wish H Ford and Steven S the best.....but this SPEED RACER will change and affect Hollywood!

Topic: SHOULD WE LISTEN OR NOT LISTEN TO SCRIPT CONSULTANTS?

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 04/14/08 12:25 PM

Here's a list of screenwriters/directors who took their scripts and made them into a movie by listening to no one and taking 100% risk AND telling everyone to **** ***.

Let's all learn from them -- and whether you want to listen to script consultants or not, that's up to you ...In my opinion -- good script consultants are needed only if you plan NOT to direct.

HISTORY will always remember these screenwriters --

1. DAVID LYNCH 2. FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA 3. DAVID CRONENBERG 4. ATOM EGOYAN 5. JAMES CAMERON 6. TARANTINO 7. WOODY ALLEN

So if you want to direct your script, listen to no one, JUST DO IT NOW and write that shooting script!!

Hey Connie,

Why are there so many screenwriting contests every year? This is a serious and sad disease.

It's an epidemic!!!!

Topic: AAA/Creative Screenwriting Comp

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 04/18/08 02:16 PM

Hello Folks,

Eight months ago I had a list of eleven screenwriting contests I was going to apply.

I learned my lesson. I CANNOT BE FOOLED AND WILL NOT BE FOOLED. Now I will only apply to four of them.

Don't get me wrong -- I have 4 quarter-finalist and I winning under my belt, but the future is even more unpredictable...

The extra money I saved I bought Dara Mark's book -- Inside Story -- a brilliant book -- soon to reconstruct the foundation of dramatic screenwriting and help us all. She has an excellent section on the magic of RD's Leathal Weapon".

Regards, BL

Just wondering if someone could answer this question -- WHY DO SCREENWRITING CONTEST EXTEND THEIR DEADLINES, I NEVER HEARD OF THIS? WHY DO THEY DO IT?

Regards

BL

Hi Collin,

Yes, this is a great accomplishment, you deserve it for being a leader and hard worker. Once again, congrats to Collin and all the winners.

I think filmaka.com is close to the Golden Globe Awards in terms of script pitching/Contests/digital filmmaking...

My pitch package I send to filmaka.com was short, maybe in the future I'll enter something longer with more details.

At the moment I'm developing some comprehensive pitch packages for future contests and pitching.

Colin, is this a good idea? Any pitching advice?

This filmaka.com webpage contests is an incredible place to get exposure. I'm so impressed with their Board members/directors and judges.

This is a contest that really care and respect the applicants.

I hope in the future all Screenwriting Contests would learn from them.

In the future I think all screenwriting contests should have a BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND a list of accomplished judges and a fair voting system, like filmaka.com

This is how a respected PUBLIC COMPANY works and that is why FILMAKA.COM is the best and will positively rock the foundation and treat all the screenwriters and digital filmmakers in this world with respect.

YES, I'M ASKING ALL THE ASPIRING AND UPCOMING SCREENWRITERS OF THE WORLD TO CONVERT PART OR ALL OF THEIR SCRIPT INTO A DIGITAL SHORT OR FEATURE. SAVE UP YOUR MONEY, CREATE A BUDGET -- IT'S POSSIBLE. IT'S NOT EXPENSIVE!!! REMEMBER, SOME OF THIS BEST SCREENWRITERS ARE DIRECTORS AND VICE VERSA. SO IT IS POSSIBLE. LET'S TAKE OURSELVES OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE AND DO IT.

We deserve it. We all work hard in this world.

I can't wait to find out about their upcoming pitching and digital filmaking contests.

Good luck to all.

Hello Folks,

I predicted the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" would make close to 40 million this weekend at the box-office.

But sadly it came in second with 18 million$$$$$$$. Jackie Chan and Jet Li kicked it into second place. I don't get this?

I'm so sad and depressed. But I'll recover.

What went wrong?

This should be a huge box-office draw when we look at the screenwriters and director involved with this summer treat -- Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

What went wrong?

Kind Regards,

BL

Thanks Santiago and Paula.

There are some screenwriting contests that never extend their deadlines.

This is a very complicated/tricky and mysterious business and we all have to be careful and ask lots of questions.

Thanks for your honest advice.

Regards,

Hello Folks,

I practically "injured" myself on a "health level" and "marriage level" to meet these deadlines.

It's not fair!!!!!

Major film production companies, stick with deadlines. We should learn from them. This is how the film industry works. We have to get used to it.

One of the best screenwriting contest in this world will never change their deadline. I know this for a fact. They have a proven track record. Bravo for them.

We all have to work with tight deadlines.

Deadlines should never be extended.

Once again, it's not fair for those writers who work night and day to meet these deadlines.

I really don't get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is painful and unfair.

I don't want to name names.

I'm currently running in full force and I have some placings in other quarter-finalist lists. It will be a great summer, I'm not giving up. I will work/edit day and night until I win.

It's just that some screenwriting contest business are so "mysterious".

Extending a deadline makes me sick.

It bumps off and eliminates the writers who already placed(quarter-finalist etc.) before the extended deadline. So unfair. How many more deadline extensions will a contest have, that's the next problem.

Ya Ya, life is unfair, I know.

Peace,

BL

Hey Mark,

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...

Will Forgetting Sarah Marshall be an iconic comedy. I say HELL NO.

Will TROPIC THUNDER be an iconic comedy. I say HELL YES.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall did not strike gold and the reason is simple -- too ""pedestrial"". (spl?)

An iconic comedy should stay on top for a least three weeks in a row. Look at Beetlejuice -- boxoffice king for 4 weeks straight.

THE HULK -- WHAT AN AMAZING TRAILER.

"THE HULK" -- I can't wait to read the screenplay, then read the novel, and then... watch the movie in IMAX. YES!

WOW -- what a trailer -- pure adrenalin, pure over the top pseudo-sublime action --BRILLIANT!

Do you think it's going to break IRON- MAN box office (3days) record of 100 million dollars?

YES!

Bob, the trailer was truly an experience I will never forget soon.

MARVEL will give these STUDIOS a good run at the box office.

THE HULK looks so uniquely entertaining that I would pay twice to see it at IMAX.

Actually it's a perfect trailer. Masterfully edited.

I loved the scene where he kicks...okay I'm not going to give it away, see if for yourself.

Lastly, on a screenwriting level, reading and watching stories like THE HULK, can be better than most traditional mythic structures...

Topic: The Mid-Story Sag

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 05/13/08 08:46 PM

Hi Patrick,

Re: Mid-Story-Sag

I recently took the movie LA CONFIDENTIAL and tried to detail out every minute of the film in reference to key theories of screenwriting. It became impossible. It cannot be done. Forget what the books are preaching.

The mid story of any script will never sag if the "lead creative" would only trust their natural story-telling instinct.

Great movies with zero "mid-story sag" were edited heavily by the director before and after the script was written.

Sometimes it takes a non-writer to make sure the movie is never boring.

Hey-- Michele, Paula, John --

So many screenwriters, contest providers, agents, renegade independent film-makers invested so much time chasing these satelite corporate INDIE film companies(which I listed above).

But I will regroup and come back stronger.

Okay, I will send it at the end of the month.

Are you expecting tons of scripts to come in near the final deadline? Is this the norm?

What's the pros and cons of submitting on the 31th of May or June 01 2008, when compared to entering during March/April 2008?

Have all the scripts been read or judged already?

Or do you accumulate them and distribute to the readers in July 2008.

I read coverage from those who are 60 years old and those who are 18 years old and those in between.

All I have to say is that it takes "a lot" of wisdom to write a pro coverage/feedback -- the good, the bad and ugly must shine on a professional level so you don't tick off the producers or owners or contest providers and get fired.

Does age matter?

I could be wrong.

Peace BL

Hey folks,

I strongly recommend that you fight bad coverage and development notes.

It keeps you alive as a writer.

Get a team together and attack those coverage providers who think they are the God's gift to film-making by getting personal and sexist.

Peace.

BL

Hello,

If a coverage provider lectures you on how to be politically correct, is that fair game? Is he out of line?

My question, why did the coverage provider get upset with the lesbian lifestyle in my script?

He said, this is wrong!

But I disagree, that coverage provider should be respectful and open.

One world, one love.

Peace forever.

Hey Folks,

INDIANA JONES part 4 did not make lots of money!!!!!!

The studio heads are not impressed with the numbers. Yes it's big, but not as big as forecasted.

www.Metacritic.com -- disclosed that the paying public give it a 5 out of ten?

And a survey from CNN Ent. dept. had bad things to say about this movie. You should hear the nasty comments.

Just check out the internet and find out what public thinks of this movie. I am really sad.

I wanted this movie to be as good as the first one. I wanted a masterpiece.

I am so sad.

What went wrong? In this case the critics don't count.

Peace.

BL

Hey Nathan,

Yes I agree -- too many coincidences in IRON MAN.

Now let's see if BATMAN-DARK KNIGHT will make history at the box office. It looks pretty violent. But in a poetic way.

I saw the third official trailer. Stunning peice of film-making.

Regards, BL

Hi Shell,

Your advice is good medicine.

Overall I'm getting mixed reviews for my script.

Some hate it.

Some gave it mixed reviews.

I would say I got two "A", tons of "C" and three "F minus"

All the coverage providers gave me different opinions. For example some readers said the script was too simple, others said it was too complicated and still others said it was too "dum" and I should bury it and still others said I'm trying to be too smart and STILL others are saying that I'm trying to imitate Borat and Tarantino and Guy Ritchie and that I am "obnoxious" and as a writer I'm laughable (why would they say something like this!!!!, so unprofessional)

But then you have other readers who said that my script was entertaining, full of energy and cinematic and would make a great movie. Actually the best compliment I received was someone told me my script falls in the "Blue Velvet" category.

Yes I have won -- one award(winner), 1 semi-finalist, 5 quarter-finalist.

Lastly -- two coverage said that I had my own style.

I will never give up!

Bottom line -- some enjoy gritty scripts others don't.

Yup, it is very painful when I get insulted on a personal level. But I learn to absorb it. What goes around comes around.

Peace BL

Hi Shell,

You are the Doctor!

Thanks for this input.

Hi Steve and all...

Steve made a great comment --

"Don't get mad...get educated and hone your craft and make the readers mad that they say..."Shit, I wish I could write like this." They'll still probably toss it in the garbage can but we mad them mad... "

After thinking about how a reader works, JEALOUSLY does exist in this business. It's a FORCE, ITS A MOVEMENT.

Maybe a professional reader can come to this forum and tell us how they handle JEALOUSLY. I don't think anyone can really control this distructive behavior, unless you're GHANDHI OR MOTHER TERESA OR IRON-MAN(Mr. Robert Downey, he never gets jealous -- why can't readers be more like him, confident and cool)

For example, if a reader wants to write a script like "GOODFELLAS" but can't, then if he/she sees a script on that level...would they throw it in the garbage? The answer is a big YES.

Steve, how do I protect myself from JEALOUSLY?

This business is heart-breaking.

Peace,

BL

Hi Walter,

The way the coverage is composed, tells you if the reader is jealous, pissed off, happy or a nasty etc.

In the past I have filed complaint to the owners of companies about specific coverages. Just a few.

The owners/managers agreed with me and said the coverages were unfair and I got a second coverage with an apology.

Answer this question why would a reader insult me and then at the end tell me that I'm a talented writer.

That's because the reader is human and sometimes they made mistakes and they get jealous and angry.

Kingsley Amis said that "if you can't annoy somebody with a what you write, I think there's little point in writing"

Scriptwriting is a professional business and should not be like the fashion business, it cannot operate on unfair emotions. As screenwriters we have to control our negative emotional behavior.

Hey Fans and Enemies....

As a screenwriter, I don't know what I did wrong.

This business of having fans and enemies is addictive. Just like in Hollywood. I am Hollywood. I will always chase Hollywood.

But I think I'm getting too many negative reviews and I should challenge myself more so I could be more entertaining to the world. I understand -- you want me to leave. Okay I'm leaving. What's the rush. Okay, I'm leaving.

I'm moving to writing more at my laptop. I got to focus and finish a few more scripts or type faster (lol).

As a professor(lol) once said and actually emailed me -- we all have too much time on our hands and we should just turn off the computer and use less of the internet. It's not productive, really too many people, including myself overuse posting on the internet. We should return to world of Mayberry. Don Knots really was a cool dude. Oh how I miss him.

Again, its kind of addictive building fans and enemies. Such is Hollywood.

Bye folks and I will never post here again. I promise.

Good afternoon and may all your dreams come true.

Keep writing!

Peace.

Ben Lanyc Los Angeles, New York ?

You guys are right.

I will turn over a new leaf.

I will not waste anyones time.

I will read the forum from now on and if you want me to post, I will.

Feel free to ask me for my opinion if you wish. I will try me best to give you a clear and respectful answer.

I really did not mean to hurt anyone.

I think there is a mis-communication here. I will speak with clarity and not "jump on the couch" a lot, like TC, if you know what I mean. But some questions I cannot answer, please respect that.

I'm not a trouble-maker. Sometimes I get caught up in the characters I create.

I' m really sorry.

At times working long hours and sleeping very little can make me hyper, idiotic and foolish and sometimes, again, creative.

But this is who I am.

Thanks Gene Langlais and all...

It's rough out there. Thank you for your advice.

I have to be myself, I agree.

I don't have to explain anything but one day I will provide some explanations and answers...

I treat the world with respect.

Flops, financial losses, insults, jokes, laughter, F minus coverages, misery and low box-office results -- can make men and women around the world cry like a sick Panda.

I don't take vacations because I like BEING THERE -- to sell my script and write like the PETER DAVID of screenwriting? and then to try to connect with the world with my cinematic vision...

One last question -- you ever read a so-so coverage that was eventually made into a movie? Is this the majority? I could be wrong.

Lanyc's final letter --

Michelle, I am really sorry if I have insulted you.

Hi Folks,

Just got back.

I almost fell off my boat when I heard this.

India's Reliance will invest $500 million dollars in a new venture with Dreamworks.

I don't mean to be insulting when I say that in the future India and China might become majority owners of everything that move in Hollywood. I think they might be here already.

I don't care what happens as long as they make A grade movies. I like new ventures.

On a math and finacial/accounting level, this takeover is possible and scary. Twenty years from now -- the name Hollywood might evolve to Reliance Entertainment.

Any thoughts? I'm happy for all the shareholders.

Hey Bobbette,

I heard they like well balanced screenplays.

Not too sweet, Not too sour, and not too hot.

Just a perfect recipe for all to enjoy.

For example, a well-balanced movie would be "The Conversation", "The French Connection" and "Wall-Street" etc.

Hope this helps.

I did some research on the internet on this company and their vision.

BL

Hey folks,

I just saw the movie WANTED, directed by an action and style genius -- Timur Bekmambetov, starring -- Angelina Jolie and the birth of a new action hero...

The movie had an unforgettable ending.

Best ending since THE MATRIX.

A few guys in the theatre applauded when the ending dialouge was delivered...

And in fact I overheard a guy tell his friend over the cellular phone in the hallway..."dude you got to see this movie, it's wicked..."

Don't miss it, just a bit too violent, but that's another thread.

Now the question I ask you -- in your ACT 3 do you have an unpredictable ending dialouge?

Do you have something as cool as the ending in "THE MATRIX" or "EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" or "SILENCE OF THE LAMBS" or "WALL STREET".

I will work hard on all my scripts to create an ending dialouge that will send a "happy shockwave smile" into the theatre.

This is what I learned after watching 'WANTED'

Peace.

What your opinion of the graphic novel 'History of Violence'.

So my question for Gordy -- who are your Readers? Please publish their BIO only.

I wish Gordy would open up the gate a bit more.

So Gordy when will you have a category for musicals or urban crime sagas or animation or graphic novels or sweeping romance like "Moulin Rouge" etc.

Hi folks,

Just found out "Mamma Mia! (2008)', the movie, is being released this month at a local cinema near you and it's getting excellent reviews.

I just wish there was an easier way to to market "screenplay -- musicals". Contests and producers should be more open-minded to musicals. Some of the greatest movies in Hollywood are musicals. Admit it folks, we all love a good musical movie.

But once in a while I do see a musical screenplay placing in the top screenplay contests.

There's hope after all.

Hi Janet,

Here it is the release dates for Mamma Mia...

I wish Hollywood would try to make at least 3 musicals per year.

Anyway, I'm not giving up. I think directors like Spike Lee, Steve S. , Depalma and Tim B. etc, would make great musicals.

Would you say Edward Scissors Hand was a semi-musical?

Hi folks,

I am about to expose a procedure that some screenplay contests use -- (I am not saying which one, but I'm sure it exist) --

1. First enter all entrants name in a database

2. Use a "free-ware" software to run that database into Google. Then the software will spit out a percentage list/grid. For example Jones XY, screenwriter, 80%; Linda MYZ, screenwriter, 76%....

3. Select 20 of them and then read their script(the first page!). Most likely they rest would be decent.

4. Last and most important step - I take my money ($40 or $50 or $35) out of my pocket throw it down the toilet and flush, once, you know water preservation.

5. OR just hire a admin junior staff to do this( that is to enter entrants name in a database). It takes one full day to do this manually and with some Google help.

I am so sad that I felt like crying this morning. But I did not. 'Mad Max' does not cry!!

But I will survive and I will work harder for a better tomorrow.

Peace, non! aka Mad Max

Hi all,

There are other contests type and similar contests around the world. And the legalities are unique in each country.

Some of these contests are even on TV.

These contests have ethics and rules.

Just imagine the scandal, if one of these top contests had a pro or semi pro pretending to be an aspiring artist. It would not exist in UK for example.

It would not be tolerated.

It's a sad day.

But if we work even harder and never give up, we will show these CONTEST PROVIDERS.

We will make it with and/or without some other more ethical contests out there.

The law and society has defined the definition of 'CONTEST'. I suggests they look it up. It foremostly has to do what's fair and not fair.

I like it Janet.

Musical will one day make a comeback.

So far, every four year Hollywood releases one to two musicals. Better than nothing.

By the way I saw Hairspray (original) 10 times in the cinema. Those were the days.

Best part -- the last song and the celebration scene with the credits rolling.

Cheers!! BL

Topic: MUSICALS, SCREENPLAYS - WRITING THEM

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 07/11/08 05:31 PM

Janet,

Re: to clear up the confusion

I did not mean it that way.

In the original Hairspray, the ending where the director edits all the best dancing while the credit goes up, that's a great dance compilation. That's what I meant.

Watch the last 10 minutes, it's the best part. Because, at the end, their dance steps stay with you forever.

Some memorable musicals ended on a musical dance number while the credit rolls.

I like muscials where everyone is still dancing while credits are rolling and really I never wanted that musical to end.

And I also like it when a musical starts off right away with big spectacular dance number while the main characters and tone are introduced.

Hopes this clears up the confusion.

Cheers.

Hi folks,

Experienced screenwriters often have elaborate crazy writing rituals?

What's yours?

Here's some I heard about --

1. I need candlelight on my desk

2. I need to order a small pizza before I start and then eat it by bites only, every hour

3. I smoke three cigars while writing from six to twelve pm.

4. I drink tons of vodka(with lots of ice) while writing

5. I like to play romantic music in the background (W. Huston!)

6. I bake and write at the same time

7. I write before I go to the dance clubs with my friends

Now what's your writing ritual?

Topic: Script Pimp "consider"?

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 08/04/08 07:29 PM

Hi Frank,

Good for you.

I'm thinking of using Chad's(Script Pimp's) coverage service for $225.00 (not a bad price!)

Where can we read your "consider" script or a sample of your script?

Could you post the COVERAGE REPORT you got from Script Pimp on this forum.

Who was the reader who provided you with this great coverage -- was it Chad himself? Or his full-time staff?

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 08/05/08 09:09 AM

Hi Poetist Soul,

Hope the depression is something of the past. Sounds like you're working it out. Most writers face this problem, off and on.

Some advice --

-take some time off, have fun -hang around positive people -do something 100% different, for example, I did some volunteering in University, worked with a zoologist, studying birds of prey, it changed my life, made it more exciting and slowly I escaped depression..

Topic: Screenwriting EXPO

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 08/06/08 04:23 PM

Good question --

How does EXPO operate? That's what I want to know.

Are they as transparent and meticulously organized as PAGE or BLUECAT or SCRIPTAPALOOZA?

How does their judging procedures work?

Who are the readers? How are they selected?

Who are the judges? How are they selected?

Are their BIO published ?

EXPO get over 5000 entrants. I would think it would be nice if the co-ordinator of this contest would come to this forum and talk to us and answer some questions.

$50 dollars is a lot of money for a needle in the haystack. That's what it feels like everytime I apply to this contest.

Not much is written on the Web about this contest. Please give some interviews so we know who you are and how you operate!!!!

Peace.

Topic: 3 R-Rated Comedies at the same time

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 08/15/08 10:24 AM

Hey Paul,

What's the logline for your R-rated comedy. What's the storyline?

Yes I agree, the future will be full of mean-funny R-rated comedies etc.

Producers are making more R-rated comedies because of YouTube, House Parties, out of control University/College culture and our addiction to the internet.

The more we are addicted the internet, the more "shock-crazy-profane" movies we will need.

Cold turkey anyone?

Are you addicted to the internet?

Addiction to the internet is an epidemic and that is why the future of cinema will be full of:

1. R-RATED and NC 17 COMEDIES 2. R-RATED and NC 17 ACTION MOVIES 3. R-RATED GRAPHIC NOVEL ADAPTATION 4. PG and AA -RATED HORROR/FAMILY ANIMATION 5. AA- ANIME 6. AND THE FIRST R-RATED BATMAN!

And Kevin Smith forever. Can't wait to see his new NC 17 movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin Smith is the future of R-rated and NC 17 comedies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every year, there is an increase in the number of new aspiring and professional screenwriters entering Screenwriting Contests , WHY?

Why does this number keep going up?

If there was no SCREENWRITING CONTESTS and/or if they were banned -- -- how would you market your screenplays? What would you do?

I know what I would do -- -- enter more PITCH FESTIVALS and master the art of pitching LIVE and finding a good manager.

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 08/18/08 10:18 AM

Yes I am too old, soon.

As we get old we loose our passion and loose our eyes, teeth and bone density... LOL

Soon, we have to apply to OLD AGE RETIREMENT homes and become a Zombie.

All this will one day be over. Don't fool yourself thinking you will be the next JAMES DEAN or SEAN PENN or MARIO PUZO or GEORGE LUCAS or ELIZABETH TAYLOR or Millionaire MARK from Scriptapalooza... lol

All iconic scripts and movies were created between 18 and 30 years old.

We are fortune of fools.

We should respect old age and death AND not fight it by going loud into the night.

Go ahead write 10 screenplays. Only one or zero will be any good.

When I'm 70 years old I will give up and escape this reality and move to South Africa like Arthur C. Clark. But I will not make it to see 70 years old.

Author: Ben Lanyc Posted: 08/20/08 04:45 PM

Patrick,

This is one of your best post.

Thank you for opening the hornet's nest.

If a contest gets 3000 entries(at $40.00 per entries). It takes a good afternoon to read the first 1-3 pages of all these scripts and eliminate 70% of the scripts.

Hard working aspiring screenwriters paid 40 dollars to get eliminated in 10 seconds or less.

I rest my case.

What did Script Pimp and Scriptapalloza and AAA and Expo4 do with all the money they made from rejecting a script in 10 seconds by reading only the first page, for example.

I think the owner of Script Pimp and Scriptapalooza and AAA and Expo4 sat down and actually did that. They made 40.00 dollars in ten seconds from unsuspected upcoming writers. Only the decent scripts went to paid readers.

"Bluecat" is still one the best contest out there.

APPLY TO BLUECAT ONLY.

AFTER YOU GET A GOOD FEEDBACK FROM BLUECAT, THEN ENTER "PAGE", "AUSTIN" AND "NICHOLL" ONLY.

1. WRITE HIGH CONCEPT SCREENPLAYS

2. ADAPT BEST SELLING NOVELS

For example, some "Western(Cowboy) movies are very one dimensional but slowly gained iconic status.

Same with High Concept action movies ---> they have the potential to become iconic or cult movies.

Hi Folks,

A friend just emailed me the quarter finalist. He's excited about winning after striking out twice with Jim and Portia. But Jim and Portia told him re-apply. I told him not to give up and yes apply again AND AGAIN and keep using their coverage services over and over at Coverage Ink. They are like writer's boot camp. Hard knocks of screenwriting.

Here is the the quarter finalist list: Congrats to all and yes their coverage works, but you get the benefits if you use them twice with the same reader or different reader.

Heather Upton, Belfast Boys CA Bennett, Death Valley Dig Kelly Murry, La Matadora A.C. Yacobian, Rasta Pasta Aaron Marshall, The Last Adventure of Martin Finch Alan Sproles, Lizanne Southgate, Eden Lost Rich Sheehy, Sliding into Home Paul Sargia, The Man Who Could Stop Time Steven Zawacki, Orcadia Suzanne Darling, Brush With Fame Dennis Bailey, Pound for Pound Chris Jopling, Blacklights Andrew Zeoli & Christian Wagner, Blueballers Attila Nagy, Gilbert Inboden, Garen Inboden, Enlighten Up Russ Meyer, Organic Svengali Vito LaBruno, Last American Guido Adam Nur, Jetpack Nisso Cohen, The Source Mark Eaten & Stacy Dymalski, Center of Fortitude Art Blum, Back from the Dead Patrick Nicholas, Edgewater Michael Coleman Jr., Clone Dan Williams, Forest Fire! Hi Lou,

Should I get the coverage from Jim and Portia after or before the contest early bird deadline?

They said that all entrants get free feeback like Bluecat and they could re-submit before the final deadline.

So there's twice the chance of winning.

It's a good system, and gives people a better chance in this already crazy race and getting "deadlier" every year.

Thanks Jim and Portia.

Hi Folks,

Producers and Coverage Gurus did not like this movie (TROPIC THUNDER) 10 years ago. They said it was politically incorrect and offensive.

But now this script/movie is sky rocketing to the bank - Box Office: $65,839,915!!!! so far!!!!!!!!!

Why is this movie doing so well?

Will "Scriptapalooza" or "Script Pimp" or "AAA" and "EXPO5" and "Final Draft", "Story Pros", ever support/pick a script like this as a finalist or winner?

How come Screenplay Contests are not taking any risks like Ben Stiller? Read the script at www.simplyscript.com for yourself, it's brilliant. It breaks all the rules.

Is R-rated "shock humor" the future of cinema? Ben Stiller says -- -- YES.

Should screenwriters write more shocking and cerebral raunchy scripts?

Overall, is it fair to say that most Screenplay Contest providers would not know what to do with TROPIC THUNDER...

It's not there fault.

Welcome to Hollywood!!!! The other side.

Listen to your heart and push your vision and stick to your guns. Ben Stiller is your role model. He's the man!

"Probe confirms train engineer's texting on the jobStory Highlights Investigators looking into whether engineer was texting at time of fatal collision

Phone records show he sent text messages during work hours on day of crash

Engineer Robert Sanchez was among 25 people killed in Friday's crash

Investigators have determined the brakes on train he was driving were not applied

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The Metrolink train engineer involved in last week's fatal collision near Los Angeles sent text messages from his cell phone while on the job, investigators said, although it was unclear whether he was doing so at the time of the crash.

Investigators do a test to find when the engineers of the two trains were able to see each other before the crash. 2 of 2 The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into claims that the engineer, 46-year-old Robert Sanchez, was sending text messages to two teenagers on Friday when his commuter train slammed into a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, killing two dozen people, including himself.

Investigators subpoenaed the phone records of the engineer and determined that he "had sent and received text messages on the day of the accident, including some while he was on duty," according to an NTSB statement Wednesday.

Investigators were still trying to determine at what time the messages were sent.

The NTSB already had determined that the brakes on the Metrolink train were not applied before the collision and that stop signals at the scene were working properly, said Kitty Higgins, an NTSB member assigned to the probe. Metrolink has said its train, carrying about 220 passengers, failed to stop for a red signal. Watch as callers to 911 describe the crash ยป

Twenty-four bodies were found at the scene after the head-on collision during rush hour Friday in the northwest Los Angeles suburb. A 25th victim, a man in his 50s, died later at a hospital. More than 130 people were injured."

Hey Folks,

Okay, I'm happy that Bluecat is a first rate contest and I will always use them....BUT

I wished that Gordy would ask questions that would get into the mind of his award winning screenwriter, just announced. "The Piano Tuner" by Timo E. Peltonen is a decent script, don't get me wrong.

Next time Mr. Gordy, please, PLEASE ask the winner tons of questions about pitching strategies, marketing tactics, writers block, stress, multi-tasking and the art and business of screenwriting and not to mention the pain of winning an award and still not getting an agent or manager or producer to bite.

Ask questions about the anguish, frustrations and selfish lifestyle of good writing. All writers and screenwriters making more than $30,000 per year, go through hell to live that lifestyle.

Writers who win contests have tons of stress. Please, PLEASE, don't paint a rosy picture.

Sorry Mr. Gordy, I was a bit disappointed with your questions. I learned nothing from them.

The Low Dweller, hypnotic and a first rate thriller. A stunning accomplishment!!!!!!!!

Written by an aspiring screenwriter, his first big sale actually. Sold for mid six digit. YES, a first-time writer, Brad Ingelsby, who works as an insurance salesman in Pennsylvania!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you read it? Did you like it?

Now my question?

Yes, this script is amazing. It's full of prose. It's full of slick descriptions. It did well at Nicholl. It's 100% atmospheric.

And I will say it again, it's masterfully written.

Okay now the question?

In the past, why were script GURUS telling me not to use prose in my scripts and don't show off with your visual flair/descriptions?
