Topic: Anybody going to Austin Film Festival?

Author: Doug Solter Posted: 10/03/00 03:22 PM

I know Paula is going, but anybody else on this site?

Just thought I might say hello if any of you guys are going.

Thanks Doug. I was all set to put in my I'M GOING!, I'M GOING! Oh, well. At this point I think everyone on the planet knows I'm going. I've been checking with friends to see who's going to be there. Some people it's the only time I get to see them - don't have video e-mail. By the time next week rolls around, I probably won't need a plane! That reminds me. I better go to the health food store to make sure I don't run out of vitamins.

Hey there,

I found out last night that my script will stop at the semifinalist level--oh well, no "bronze typewriter" for me--but what the hell, I'm going anyway.

Embarrassing total "chick" question follows: Er, I know this has been a thread before, but (Paula, maybe you can clarify) what the heck do I wear to this thing? Clothes range from "dressy to strange?" (stick me in the strange/hip-hop/tomboy-who-fell-out-of-a-Goodwill-truck category)...unfortunately I'm a little dense and don't quite know what "dressy" means and as a uniform-wearing retail grunt, I don't quite know what businessy clothes are right, nor do I have any, and probably wouldn't be caught dead in anything too conservative or suity. How do people dress for the BBQ (*gulp*--I'm a vegetarian!), the awards ceremony, the premieres, the panels? Any advice would be *hugely* appreciated as I'm a walking "Glamour Don't."

Cover your bod. Plain and simple. It is truly ecelectic. Most of the time i just wear an "Austin" T-shirt and jeans. Sometimes I wear a casual dress because it is hot in Austin in October. some wear shorts. I've seen two guys in suits (out of 1000). I don't think I've ever seen anyone in an evening gown. The presenters are usually casual (jeans and T's or regular slacks and short-sleeved shirts). Sometimes you'll see dress clothes in the evening when someone's gone out to the nightclubs. Bottom line wear what you like. What I said before was, if you can wear it on any street in America without getting arrested, you can wear it in Austin.

Re the "chick" question (BTW, more guys than gals ask about this every year on MWS)...

I live in Austin and it's definitely a casual town. The Omni and Driskill are fancy-schmancy hotels, however.

The good nes is: Jeans work in any situation. I usually wear jeans (with boots, of course), a blouse or T, and a blazer. This way, the look is casual with a touch a business thrown in.

Personally, I would avoid shorts and sneakers because, IMO, it screams amateur.

Also, the all-black NY look is what the female biz folks wear. Can't go wrong with black anywhere, anytime :-)

See y'all in a little bit...

Hey everyone,

If you're going to Austin, maybe you can stop by my website (www.colleendemaio.50megs.com), where there are a couple of photos of me (the redhead ones are current)...and that way you'll know me when you see me and can introduce yourselves!! Incidently, I'm a little dense when it comes to names, so if it takes me a minute to make the connection, don't be offended. (I may think, wow, that name sounds familiar, s/he must be a famous screenwriter!) I'm just 5'3", therefore not easily seen in a crowded room, but I may be with my big, curly-black-haired Colombian guy, who's a bit more easily spotted.

See you there!

PS - Lois, thanks for the "fashion advice"! Paula - You were among the people I tried to email, but yours bounced back.

Colleen - I emailed you and myself (cyber self-talk?). It worked fine. Guess they got my check :) Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Hi folks:

I'll be there too this time.

If you're on AZ feel free to Z-mail me.

I have a digi-photo, but the color went wonky, so it doesn't look all that much like me anyway & I have enough cyber-stalkers without putting my image online...
