Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Andrew Bennett

An interview with screenwriter Andrew Bennett regarding the Get Initiative Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: Turtle Master and the Art of Walking is a buddy comedy about a guy who got dumped by his girlfriend. Convinced he's in love with Jennifer Love Hewitt after a masturbatory epiphany, he takes off on a road trip with his friends to chase his dream of meeting her face to face.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Turtle Master has been entered into many contests with varying results. Doing contests has taught me that you must steer different projects based on their genre and subject matter. A buddy comedy like this will never win Austin or Nicholls, but there are a lot of people that would be entertained by it.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: I was totally satisfied with the competition and would recommend it to other writers. It seems like it's a startup and could really go places.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: No feedback was given.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: The contest placement enabled me to generate several script requests. Any contest win gives you a mark of credibility that makes producers and agents more willing to read your product.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I have completed seven feature length scripts. I've dabbled in several different genres and with varying budget requirements. I currently write for a TV show called My Show is Better Than Your Show . I've talked with Area 13 Films about the production of my horror script "The Grandmother".

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I currently reside in Northern Virginia, close to Washington D.C. I hope to move to LA once I secure representation.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I never stop working. It's not work for me, it's just life. I'm not always writing, but I'm always writing. My next script is an uplifting ensemble piece about people dying of cancer.
