Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Juli Royea

An interview with screenwriter Juli Royea regarding the Open Door/Script Magazine Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: First let me say that I won first place in the Scr(i)pt Magazine Open Door Screenwriting Contest sponsored by the Brant Rose Agency, not Kaplan Perrone. :)

The title of my script is THE LONG RIDE HOME and it is about a young girls struggle to keep her family together, while fulfilling her mother's dying wish of taking their family on a cross-country road trip to see the ocean.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: This contest always rated high on various screenwriting websites and the fact that it was co-sponsored by an agency was attractive. I entered this script in the Actor's Choice Awards at The Screenwriting Conference in Santa Fe last June and won there as well.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: I was very satisfied with Script Magazine's handling of this contest. They got all of my awards right out to me and even called me at home to notify me. I had totally forgotten that I had entered, and so was blown away when I found out that I had actually won.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: No feedback was given, but none was promised. I would have loved it if there had been some, any and all feedback is always helpful.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: I am in contact with the agency that sponsored the contest, and they are reading my second script right now. I have also received several requests for my script from agents and producers through Sell-a-Script.com, which was part of my prize.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I started out as an actress and singer, who wrote bad plays on the side. I have been writing screenplays for about two years now and have two other completed feature length scripts and two shorts. I am currently enrolled in the Certificate Program through UCLA online and am loving it. For the last seven years I have been writing, adapting and directing shows for a cabaret theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: Only in my mind. I currently live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and love living here, but would move to L.A. in a hot second if that is what my career needed.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I am currently doing research for a new script about the Orphan Trains and am in the outlining stage for another family film.
