Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Kevin Coleman

An interview with screenwriter Kevin Coleman regarding the Phoenix/Arizona Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: The screenplay is "Tappers."

It's a medical thriller about a research doctor who discovers a cure for a deadly virus that is plaguing the world. His breakthrough is linked to the fluid enkephalin, a natural chemical that is secreted from the brain upon a victim’s violent death.

Now, with the pressure of millions of dying virus patients bearing down on him, Doctor Eric Bain must now synthetically reproduce enkephalin. The problem is, without a synthetic replacement, someone must die in order for someone else to live!

The cure becomes as deadly as the virus itself when another interested party moves in to capitalize on the discovery by creating a black market for the lifesaving serum by training a team of so-called “Tappers” to extract enkephalin from the brains of carefully selected targets.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Other than the fact that I love Arizona - the festival looked very worthwhile and well-run.

This was "Tappers'" first festival/contest. I have entered the script in a few other upcoming contests and I am anxiously awaiting the outcome.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: The Phoenix Film Festival is a first-class outfit. I very much enjoyed myself during my stay at the festival.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: Yes. One of the prizes was in-depth coverage from Lisa James at Venice Arts. She brought up a couple of good points that I will readdress in the script.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: Yes. "Tappers" is now on producers' radar.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: "Tappers" success has definitely established me as a "player" now that I have two award-winning screenplays. My other project, "Kokopelli," won the Gold Remi Award for Best of Show at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival and Best Screenplay at the 2000 Port Hueneme International Film Festival.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I live in Houston, Texas and currently have no plans to move to California.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I am currently working on producing both "Kokopelli" and "Tappers" and things are looking very good. In the meantime, I will be writing the sequel to "Kokopelli."
