GOBLIN
Horror comedy in the 80's retro style of "Gremlins". Two young, naive newlyweds move into a Victorian house that's in serious need of supernatural pest control. The new bride discovers and befriends a E.T.-type creature who may be a monster but is the key to an ancient mystery that may save their marriage...if they don't kill each other first.
Adam, a brilliant but unemployed mathematician looking for a teaching job, is a hopeful dreamer who believes that his revolutionary math formula will solve their financial problems, and that “love conquers all.” Shelly, an attractive, imaginative health-club receptionist, harbors a suppressed dream of becoming a Broadway dancer. An independent spirit in desperate need of female empowerment.
These two newlyweds truly love each other. They aren’t yet prepared for marriage and responsibility, which leads to the kinds of tensions and frustrations that we can all identify with. But something in their new home magnifies their problems…
An ancient GOBLIN, conjured up by the Queen of Sheba to protect her marriage to King Solomon, abandoned in an African temple and discovered in the 1920’s by an archeologist who brought him home to the Victorian. When the archeologist died mysteriously and his wife went insane, the creature slept in a dormant state inside Solomon’s magical ring, waiting like a genie in a bottle for a new queen to serve.
“GOBBY”, as Shelly later calls him, is an ageless, green-furred, three-foot creature with Cheshire cat eyes, rows of shark’s teeth and deadly claws, and a rich variety of childlike expressions that switch from sweet to menacing. A dark version of E.T. with a mogwai purr and a gremlin growl, he’s strangely adorable. But very lethal.
Shelly accidentally awakens Gobby in their attic and adopts him as a secret pet. A mother-child relationship evolves between them, Shelly unaware that Gobby has mistaken her for his creator, the Queen of Sheba, and exists only to protect her from other humans. He taps into Shelly’s female subconscious, her primitive instincts dangerously realized, as the creature turns against all her misperceived enemies…
Her man-hating sister ABBY who undermines Shelly’s marriage to Adam…their marriage therapist TABITHA, whom Shelly jealously suspects is pursuing her husband…snooping old neighbor MRS. TALLY, and many others…and ultimately unsuspecting Adam himself.
To their rescue comes MR. JENKINS, an affable but inept pest exterminator and inventor of weird gadgets like the Probetron, Demon Tranquilizer Gun and Goblin Blaster. A crackpot on a mission, Mr. Jenkins tries to convince a disbelieving Adam that this goblin must be destroyed before his wife succumbs to its ancient spell.
Murder and mayhem take over the couple’s lives. Shelly transforms into a female-empowered spirit like the Queen of Sheba and begins to doubt her love for Adam. Neither Adam nor Mr. Jenkins can solve the mystery of what’s happening. Only a curious neighborhood orphan, 12-year-old boy detective JASPER, discovers the truth when he finds the archeologist’s old diary: the secret history of this house and ancient Sheba’s spell over Shelly. Only Solomon’s magic ring can reverse the spell.
As Shelly subconsciously turns against Adam, and her pet minion targets him for death, Adam sets out to end the spell and save their disintegrating marriage, with the help of Jasper and Mr. Jenkins – before Shelly goes mad, before Gobby kills again. In the end, will love conquer all?
