Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Catherine Rubey

An interview with screenwriter Catherine Rubey regarding the Key West Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: Baggage (aka Life, Love & Truth) follows an absentee father's reconnection with his adult children while he and his former wife discover a new but familiar heat.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: After researching other contests, it was an appropriate contest for my first entry. It is also entered in the Telluride Indie Fest.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes, we were advised of the contest status, and all inquiries were answered in a timely manner. The contest organizers have been courteous and polite and have fufilled their duties as such.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: No feedback promised or offered.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: Indeed. Interest and inquiries from several production and management companies. I am also considering producing the project through my company, InGe, Inc. so stay tuned!

Have preliminary talent, principle locations and key crew positions secured.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: This is my second feature. I have written a half-hour teleplay for The Golden Girls for a graduation requirement from Indiana University School of Telecommunications (TV & Film). Episode was submitted and considered via the professor; however, the series was cancelled.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I live in Chicago and have the means to travel as needed for my projects.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: All I need is TIME! I have two projects in development: a suspense/thriller in the vein of The Net meets Speed; and a romantic comedy: Sleepless in Seattle meets The Simple Life.
