An interview with screenwriter Larry Postel regarding the PAGE International Writing Competition.
Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?A: X-MAS FILES. It's a holiday comedy about three kids who are recruited by Santa to help defend the North Pole against a Christmastime invasion by a bitter-ex elf. I like to say that it's SPY KIDS meets THE GRINCH and THE DIRTY DOZEN.
Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?A: I liked the fact that PAGE broke the entries down by genre/category. I was also attracted to their substantial prize list. I also entered X-MAS FILES in the 2005 Worldfest Competition and won Platinum First Prize in the family category.
Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?A: I was extremely satisfied with the administration of PAGE. They met every deadline and kept me posted every step of the way. Their coordinator, Jen Berg, is incredibly responsive and attentive to the entrant's needs and questions.
Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?A: I did not request feedback, but I know PAGE does offer it.
Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?A: Yes, the success in PAGE has helped me a tremendous amount. I had numerous requests based on PAGE's press releases and publicity. In addition, I played up the award in my own queries, which resulted in many more requests. I was contacted by top level agents, managers and producers. Some of PAGE's judges also requested the script for an "official" read.
Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?A: I have been writing screenplays for over 20 years. I am a fulltime freelance advertising copywriter. I have written many other screenplays and recently received an assignment to write a low budget horror-comedy for an indie producer.
Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?A: I live in Dallas and have no plans to move to Los Angeles. However, I would certainly travel there for meetings.
Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?A: I'm always working on a new script. Plus, I'm currently working on the assignment previously mentioned. That producer is so pleased with what I've done that he's already offered me another assignment.
