Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Rich Monahan

An interview with screenwriter Rich Monahan regarding the Screenwriter Showcase Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: My script is called SAMMY SHOES: MED STUDENT and it's a comedy about a bumbling med student who is asked by his mobster "Uncle Londie" to whack a patient whose life he just saved. His mom and grandmom insist he’s got no choice. Friends and neighbors offer lethal advice. And his childhood sweetheart, Londie’s daughter, offers to help with the hit. Ultimately, Sammy decides to save the patient and take on the mob instead.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: A friend of mine had mentioned the Screenwriters Showcase to me and after checking it out I thought they would be a good choice.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Well, I'd have to say the contest was handled really well as they awarded me First Place. In all seriousness, they were easy to deal with and very professional and they actually did send me the awards they promised, which was Final Draft. They were great!

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: The only feedback was the award notice, so again, I thought they handled that pretty well.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: The contest clearly helped especially with my confidence to continue efforts to find an agent or manager. Shortly after the award announcement I did sign with a management company to represent me. With them I've gone though several revisions to the script and now we're preparing to take it out to agents.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I consider myself very fortunate as I have a good job in the business working as a supervising producer for Discovery reality/documentary programs. I have written several previous screenplays, one that my manager really likes called AMERICAN BLOOD, a thriller murder/mystery in which three small town high-school football players are brutally murdered by a drifter.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I moved to LA just three years ago and I really like it.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Currently, I am working on a new action/romance script. My new management company is very excited about it.
