Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Janet Fogg

An interview with screenwriter Janet Fogg regarding the Southwest Writers Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: In CHARTRES, architect Claudia and historian Charles follow clues to a secret judged so dangerous by the Druids, the Knights Templar, the Freemasons, and the Church itself that they've joined forces to keep mankind forever in the dark. What starts as a quest to uncover why a stone in the Cathedral's structure has moved leads to a DaVinci Code-like unravelling of secrets.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I attended the SWW conference first in 1997 and was impressed with the faculty and attendees. My collaborator, Karen Lin, and I both hoped to make contact with agents and editors at the conference but when it was cancelled were unable to fulfill that goal.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: The administration of the contest seemed fine although we were extremely dissapointed that the conference was cancelled with very short notice. We did receive our award, as promised.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: The feedback we received was very helpful and we incorporated several of the suggestions in our recent draft.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: We were not contacted by any agents, managers or producers as a direct result of this contest win.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: Together, Karen Lin and I have written two paranormal screenplays and one sci/fi script. In addition, my husband Richard and I are nearing completion of a "hard" sci/fi screenplay and have several others in development.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I live near Boulder, Colorado and do not intend to move to Los Angeles. I would be more than happy to travel there as needed!

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Karen Lin and I continue to market our work, with the help of an agent on the sci/fi script, and my husband and I have 2 agents interested in our sci/fi screenplay. I hope to continue to work with both Karen and Richard!
