MovieBytes Interview: Lawrence Smith

An interview with Lawrence Smith regarding the Gypsy Lar Writing Competition.

Q: Who sponsors this contest, and what is their background in the industry? When was the contest founded?

A: The contest was founded at the end of 2006 when we were close to finishing our feature movie "The Books Of John"

We are actually sponsoring the contest. Gypsy Lar Productions

We have produced 2 full length plays and one short and a feature movie.

Q: What role do you play personally in the adminstration of the contest?

A: I am one of the two Producers, Directors and Writers.

Q: Have any of the winning scripts from the contest been sold or produced?

A: This is our first contest.

Q: Who judges the early rounds of the competition? What are their qualifications? Who judges the final rounds?

A: We will have a panal of independent people from the gay and lesbian community who will be judging all scripts.

Q: Do the early-round judges read the entire script, or do they stop after a certain number of pages?

A: Yes they will.

Q: Are the judges looking for any specific type of script? Are scripts of a certain genre more likely to do well?

A: We are open to any genre as long as the main two charactors are gay, lesbian, bisexual or trangendered.

Q: What do you do promote your winning writers, and to publicize their scripts?

A: The top winner will get their movie made.

Q: What advice can you offer to writers entering your contest?

A: Try to be different. Don't just send the run of the mill love story.

We would like to see something that hasn't been done or done very little.
