Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter fred perry

An interview with screenwriter fred perry regarding the ScriptVamp/Attention Grabber Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: THE TANK:

When a renowned scientist learns that her brainchild -- a top secret experiment between computers and humans -- has gone horribly wrong, her refusal to proceed further, leads to her abduction, forced participation, and a mindbending discovery.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I had previously won another Scriptvamp contest for my feature script, CROSSINGS, and was impressed with their personal and professional administration of the competition.

Q: Were you satisfied with the administration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes, yes, and yes!

Q: How long did it take you to write the script? Did you write an outline beforehand? How many drafts did you write?

A: The first draft took about five weeks and I worked off of a very loose outline. I ended up writing three drafts of the script.

Q: What kind of software did you use to write the script, if any? What other kinds of writing software do you use?

A: Final Draft. That's the best for my needs.

Q: Do you write every day? How many hours per day?

A: When on a project, I write every day, eight-to-ten hours per day, or until I'm too burnt-out to continue. It's the only way I can function.

Q: Do you ever get writer's block? If so, how do you deal with that?

A: Frequently. Playing poker and/or gold prospecting help solve that problem; For some reason, my subconscious works out the problem(s) while I'm focused on something entirely different.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I'm an Army vet, a former special ed. teacher, and have co-written six feature films (complete list available on my IMDb page under Fred C. Perry Films). Have written numerous feature scripts and shorts, have won multiple screenplay competitions, and am a produced playwright.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: Nope. Moved out of that jungle two years ago and am happy as hell living on the central California coast. When required, I commute.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Yup.
