Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Charles Hall

An interview with screenwriter Charles Hall regarding the Practical Paradox Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: PAPER ANGELS tells the story of two strangers touched in very different ways by the September 11 tragedy and how they are brought together through extraordinary circumstances. It’s essentially a short piece about survivor guilt and finding the courage to move forward in the face of overwhelming loss.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I entered this particular contest and subsequently circulated the screenplay to several associates solely to get some initial reactions. PAPER ANGELS deals with sensitive subject matter, therefore I want to tread carefully. It has gone on to win or place in a number of other competitions.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes to all three questions.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: On top of cash, I was given copies of the readers’ notes. The prize also includes a phone consultation, which I have yet to use because of my schedule. One reader’s comments convinced me to revise one of the story elements.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: The administrator forwarded my synopsis and has kept in touch. While it’s true I've been contacted, I can’t say for certain it was because of this or another competition.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I have a background in commercial production, but worked for several years in industrial coatings. I’m a produced screenwriter-playwright.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I don’t live in Los Angeles, nor do I have any plans to move there.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Next on deck is a feature-length dark comedy.
