Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Kevan Peterson

An interview with screenwriter Kevan Peterson regarding the Treasure Entertainment Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: The script is a dark comedy entitled Voice Over. It is about a voice over artist, P.J. Anderson, who gets his big break when a famous Hollywood actor is murdered and he is selected to voice over the remaining scenes. Once it is revealed that the killer and the voice over artist have the same name, P.J. must prove his innocence or the film will be shelved.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: There are so many contests available to enter, I feel extremely lucky that I chose this one to participate in. I entered it for it's first place prize, which is a Management contract. But I can't complain about the second place prize.

I recently placed second in the Harold Crain Student Screenwriting competition as well for Voice Over.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: They were very helpful and met their deadlines preciously on time. I emailed them for feedback and they responded immediately. I was very happy with the way the contest was run and have received all of my prizes.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: The feedback I got was wonderful. They helped me identify some areas where the script could improve. I am currently doing a rewrite based off their notes.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: One of the prizes involves sending e-queries to production companies and agents through sellascript.com. I will be doing that mid-June. But in the meantime if any production companies or agents want to read the script based off my winning personality in this interview, they can contact me at kevanpeterson@yahoo.com.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I have been involved in two television sketch comedy shows where I acted as writer and producer. I have just graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in TV, Radio, Film and Theatre and have had the chance to work on three feature-length screenplays while there.

I currently co-wrote a feature script that is in the process of getting funding. As I understand it a B-List star is interested and a location is set. I was recently hired to write a spec T.V. show which has been shot and is being shopped around.

I have sample television scripts of The Simpsons and Roswell for any interested parties as well as some sample feature screenplays.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I'm currently living near San Francisco. I plan on moving to L.A. as soon as I can secure some income there.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I am wrapping up on a feature script called Imagination Nation. It is a family-drama about a young boy, Talfan Holden, who has an imaginary friend. His parent's disapprove of anything make believe and Talfan must grow up quickly or he will lose his family.

Two scripts I am in the process of prepping are The Perfect Man, a comedy about the first genetically-engineered man turning twenty-one and the media frenzy that tears his life apart.

And Reality Ruined My Life, a story of a Reality TV show producer who documents his own family without their knowledge in an attempt to get a highly rated television show. The show becomes a hit due to the families constant bickering. Now the producer must decide, save his family or his job.
