Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter David Jenkins

An interview with screenwriter David Jenkins regarding the Red Inkworks Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: The title of my screenplay is GHOSTS OF SEPTEMBER. It's about a former security screener at Boston Logan who screened the terrorists on American Airlines Flight 11. He tries to keep his past a secret when he becomes involved with a 9/11 widow whose husband died on the same flight. In short, it's a story about redemption and forgiveness, wrapped around a very real and horrific event.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I entered my romantic comedy 132 DAYS in Red Inkworks' fall 2004 competition. It was a top 50 finalist, and placed 23rd overall. Larry Myles runs one of the most professional contests out there. The feedback and encouragement you get is priceless. Of all the contests that offer feedback, Red Inkworks is one of the best.

This is the first competition I’ve entered GHOSTS into.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Red Inkworks has met every deadline on time. They truly are one of the most professionally run contests out there.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: The feedback that I received from Larry has been extremely helpful, both in 2004 and 2005. I entered the contest this year looking for feedback on a difficult subject. Red Inkworks more than delivered.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: The exposure has been great. This is going to give my queries a boost. While it's only been a few days since the results were released, I imagine this will help in marketing the script.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I live in Portland, Oregon. I've been writing for a few years, in between working at a high-tech company. I've completed eight feature length scripts and numerous shorts.

My award winning dramedy THE MEMORIAL COUNSELOR was recently optioned by Long Strange Trip Productions, LLC. Filming is slated to begin this June in the Portland area.

My horror/thriller OVERTIME is close to being optioned by a director in Europe.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I do not live in Los Angeles, and do not have any plans to move in the near future.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I have several scripts in various stages. I've been doing a lot of rewriting lately, so I'm feeling the urge for a burst of creativity that only comes from writing a new script. My next script will be a quirky comedy set in Goldendale, Washington. Think NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE meets GHOST WORLD.
