Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Jorge J. Lomastro

An interview with screenwriter Jorge J. Lomastro regarding the Hollywood Scriptwriting Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: The title of the script is "The Second." It's a Drama/Thriller. Basically, it looks at the way the world can be effected by people who decide to play God, be it through manipulation of others, or the literal manipulation of the human genome.

A simple logline might be: "What happens when man plays God?"

It's a good character driven story with a lot of cool twists and turns. And, it gets a little creepy too.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I researched the people and gathered as much info. as I could about the competition and the people behind it. It looked good. So, I took a shot.

I've entered a few other contests. I haven't yet received any answers as to where I've placed. However, I just learned I'm in the Wisconsin Screenwriter's Forum second round... Cross your fingers.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: It's all good. They didn't really promise all that much to begin with. So, I really got more than I expected.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: That was a weird one. I won first place, but I have to admit the feedback was questionable. I've had professional coverage done and received high marks. So, it isn't just ego on my part that's causing me to wonder. Don't get me wrong, I'm not out to bite the hand, as it were. A win is a win. And, I would certainly enter their contest again.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: I only just learned about my win at HSI and my second round placement at WSF. So, I can't say what will come of it.

I have already learned from it though. And, that's certainly worth something.

Stay tuned viewers...

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: Yup. I've written several other screenplays and am writing more now.

I've written/produced/directed/edited, slept with, an independent film as well. I never bothered getting into contests before though. Thing is, I need to enter the "main stream," and I think this avenue might help me get there.

I have plenty of other blah..., blah..., blah... background related to the industry too. But, unless you're gonna hire me, you probably don't really need to hear it here.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: Nope, don't live there. But, it's really only a matter of time now.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Already been said. Actually, I'm cleaning up this one a little more. There's no such thing as "the perfect script." I go with the way some Native American cultures think of it. If you did write a perfect one, you'd be dead before you sold it anyway. But, that doesn't mean I can't still tweak it to the best of my ability.

Again, I'm working on another screenplay as well. It's a CrimeDrama/Thriller. It has a very strong Latino core. I feel that part of our population has been overlooked in the film industry. So, I may as well try to help that community as I go.

Thanks for the interview. And, I hope the two people that actually read it enjoy what I have to say.
