Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Don Rosenblit

An interview with screenwriter Don Rosenblit regarding the Writers Place Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: PLAY DEAD is a film noir mystery/comedy (circa 1940-50's) set in an animated dog world called Collywood. Rod Weiler is a down 'n out private eye dog who seeks revenge for the murder of his Paw. he meets a femme fatale and gets dragged into the disappearance of a famous film director, fights the bad dogs and his inner demons as bodies turn up at the mansion of the legendary film icon, Clara Bow Wow.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Was in a contest entering mood and checked Moviebytes for "Most Significant" contest and "Writers Place" caught my attention. It was the first contest that I entered and I got a third place. Also made the cut in the Austin Film Festival.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: I was very satisfied with "Writers Place". They delivered in all ways. I was particularly impressed by the personal attention I received.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: I got great feedback which resulted in even a better script then the one originally submitted. In everyway, the script has been improved in plot, structure and particularly character arc.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: A few nibbles to date, but much too early in the process.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: PLAY DEAD is my first screenplay. Early on I worked in television writing comedy, but spent most of my career as a creative director for an ad agency. The concept of a private eye dog in an alternate world called Collywood, grew out of a series of animated dog food commercials that I created years ago.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I do not live in Los Angelos and at the moment have no plans to relocate.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I'm rather obsessed with this fantasy world of dogs acting human, flawed and funny and continue to develop the concept in multible mediums. It has appeal to both a youth and adult audience. Collywood has legs (four of them) with strong marketing potential. I'm just finishing a kid's chapter book (Roddy Weiler and his pack of undercover pups) and my web site www.collywood.com has had over 2.5 million hits.
