An interview with screenwriter Kevin Henderson regarding the Screenplay Showdown Writing Competition.
Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?A: TERM LIFE
It's a comedy about a clueless blue collar guy who attempts to sell life insurance in order to impress his ex-girlfriend. Despite the fact that his ex marries a wealthy rival, their lusty love reignites and propels them into a world of adultery, lies, murder...and a hefty life insurance policy.
A: I think the fact that it was run by Ed Rugoff, the same guy who ran The Chesterfield. I did enter the script into about 6 or 7 contests. I made it through the first cuts in most of them. Got to the semis in two. Won this one. Note: This was the 2005 contest.
Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?A: Yes. Yes. Yes. Ed and company were very generous with their time and efforts. They were selfless in their desire to see me get to the next level.
Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?A: I was given feedback by Ed himself, the contest director.
Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?A: Absolutely. Ed went above and beyond what I ever would have hoped for in getting my script around. He not only got it to the places that he promised, but got it to a bunch of other places as well. Agents, Managers, production companies. I had several managers who wanted to sign me and Ed was always available to advise me. They then flew me down to Nashville for their yearly conference. The conference was attended by big agents, producers and successful screenwriters from LA who Ed personally introduced me to. A rep from HBO was there who promised to read my script which he did and being impressed invited me in to HBO several months later to meet with him and his associates. And the conference it self was a blast. Low key. Easy access to panelists. Lots of social events in the evenings.
Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?A: I'm a professional actor trying to make the switch to professional screenwriter. To date I've written 4 full length screenplays, a bunch of shorts, a bunch of TV specs, and several plays. I have a sitcom in development with an LA production company.
Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?A: I live in NYC.... I hope to move to LA by 2008
Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?A: Just finished a new script which my manager and I have high hopes for.
