Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Pat Fitzgerald

An interview with screenwriter Pat Fitzgerald regarding the Wisc. Screenwriters Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: KID, the true story of William "Billy the Kid" Bonney. He lived to right the injustices done to him by New Mexico's power mongers and died for the love of a woman.

KID's plot is an interweave of historically proven facts about Billy's life and the previously untold legend--told to me by the Kid's great grandson--of the woman who bore his child.

I'm a Billy the Kid historian who's never been pleased with any film made about Billy--or rather, any film in which his name was exploited. I figured it was up to me to accurately capture his spirit via a screenplay.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Christine DeSmet, from whom I took a screenwriting tutorial, urged me to enter. KID is my first screenplay. The Wisconsin Screenwriters Forum's contest is the only one in which I have competed--so far.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes, I'm satisfied with how the contest was conducted. The deadlines weren't met with the greatest of accuracy. I believe this is because the judges didn't care to do a rush job and I appreciate their dedication.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: I await my feedback with confidence it will be helpful.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: I am currently planning a strategy to market Kid.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I'm a chick who hangs out with bikers and blues musicians. I love Western history, cowboy movies and movies in general.

I was bitten by a writing bug years ago and consider a day spent not writing as a day wasted. I gave screenplay writing a try to challenge myself; the concept seemed so impossible. Much to my surprise, I discovered I enjoy the process.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: Nope, I do not live in Los Angeles. I have no plans to move there, but one should never say never.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I started a new Western script, about the numerous shady characters who once populated Las Vegas, New Mexico. Las Vegas is the Old West's best kept secret. Every famed outlaw and lawman either lived or passed through there at one time. I plan to be the first to portray the town in a film.

I am also outlining a psychological thriller that takes place in modern times, involving a psychiatrist who is kidnapped by one of his patients.
