An interview with screenwriter Jennifer Weber regarding the Nevada Film Writing Competition.
Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?A: "The Civil Servant"
The Civil Servant involves two Texas College students, Kim, and Erik, who come across a classified government file concerning a comotose woman, who, before an accident, was regarded by the U.S defense department as one of the few people in the world with legitimate parapsychic abilities.
Erik and Kim further discover she's been hidden away for years in a nursing home in a small Nevada town, where her first and now grown son, resides, unaware that his mother has given birth to 12 other children the past twenty years or so, through artificial insemination, in the hopes that her offspring have inherited her immense powers.
Curiosity gets the best of Kim and Erik and they set out to "observe" the grown son and get in completely over their heads.
A: I am a Las Vegas native, and I set most of my scripts in small Nevada towns. This is my first contest with this particular script and I'm thrilled to have won. I put The Civil Servant on the Zoetrope web-site and it recieved consistant very good ratings, so it gave me the confidence to enter The Nevada Film contest.
Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?A: The contest notification results were only about a week late, but it didn't bother me at all. I haven't received my prize money yet because the awards luncheon at the Palms Hotel isn't until January 26th. But I was called on the phone and notified, and the two people I talked with Jeanne Corcoron and Charles Geocaris were very happy for me and explained all the upcoming events culminating from being a first place winner.
Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?A: The feedback is on it's way, but I received past feedback from a few other scripts I entered in Nevada Film, and, yes, it was very helpful.
Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?A: Not yet. It's still too fresh, but I'm told The Civil Servant will be sent to fifteen or so production companies, and I'll sure feel braver sending out query letters to agents now!
Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?A: I have fifteen completed screenplays of various genres, and I have placed twice in the top ten and once in the top twenty five with past scripts.
Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?A: I will if the situation arises where I need to.
Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?A: Yes, I'm working on my 16th script and hope to have it ready for the next Nevada Film competition, but I want to put it on Zoetropes web-site first to get feedback.
