Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Mike Walsh

An interview with screenwriter Mike Walsh regarding the ScriptVamp/Short Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: THE TECHXORCIST is a comedy about malware in a computer, and how, in general -- at best -- dealing with the world of computers can be frustrating and fruitless. One of the authors, Mark Gagnon, who's a pretty good "techxorcist" himself, was trying to get a bug out of my computer. "This thing is possessed!" he declared. That got my wheels turning. From there, we knocked some ideas around, laughed ourselves silly, conjured up a script draft, and lured in Dave Langley, its third author, to direct a production of the story.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Love ScriptVamp/DreamQuest folks. Unerringly professional, polite and are on the side of the writer every time.

This is the first time the script has been entered in any contest. We couoldn't have hoped to fare better than Grand Prize in the comedy division.

Q: Were you satisfied with the administration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: We were/are very satisfied.

Q: How long did it take you to write the script? Did you write an outline beforehand? How many drafts did you write?

A: What was entered into the contest was far different than what we had written and shelved three years ago. We each moved onto other projects. But I (Mike Walsh) dusted it off when I saw MovieBytes advertising ScriptVamp's short contest, entered and voila'!

There were probably 10 - 15 drafts before we entered the current winner.

Q: What kind of software did you use to write the script, if any? What other kinds of writing software do you use?

A: We all use Final Draft version 8.

Q: Do you write every day? How many hours per day?

A: Not EVERY day. Life gets in between me and the keyboard. As for the others, one is more an idea guy than a scribe, and both are more involved in the production aspect of film than anything else. BOTH are extremely clever.

Q: Do you ever get writer's block? If so, how do you deal with that?

A: I have the opposite problem. Haven't learned to clone myself what with all the ideas barraging my mind.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: Wrote in college, creatively; wrote ad copy -- won several awards. I have several features I'm working on. No TV scripts. But a good idea for a pilot...

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: No plans to move to L.A.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Several new scripts.
