The Nantucket Film Festival - unique in its dedication to supporting and promoting the art of screenwriting - launched the Showtime Tony Cox Screenplay Competition in 1996. The Festival's screenwriting focus was inspired by Nantucket's rich history as a writer's retreat and is one of the main reasons for the event's distinction as an important cultural institution.
The competition is named after the late Winston ''Tony'' Cox, former Showtime Networks Chairman and longtime Nantucket summer resident. Throughout his career, Cox was devoted to highlighting the important role of the writer in bringing high-quality original content to cable television. Tony's legacy has helped establish a prestigious reputation for the Competition whose highly vetted finalists command notice from producers and development executives nation wide. Previous Competition jurors include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lili Taylor, Tom McCarthy, Diana Ossana, Bobby and Peter Farrelly, Stanley Tucci, Rosie Perez, Kit Carson, Greg Mottola, Nancy Tenenbaum, Nancy Savoca, Lee Daniels, Anthony Swofford, and Donna Giglotti.
Notification: Early June
The Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award is Nantucket Film Festival's celebration of the legacy of Adrienne Shelly. The award honors the outstanding achievement by a female filmmaker chosen from each year's selection of features, documentaries, and short films. The winner will be provided with transportation to and lodging at the festival, along with a reception in her honor and a $5,000 cash prize.
As a renewal to its commitment to storytelling, NFF and Showtime have increased the cash prize for Showtime’s Tony Cox Screenwriting Award for Feature Scripts to $5,000 and have added three new categories: Television Pilot (Hour-Long) with an award of $1,000, Television Pilot (Half Hour-Long) with an award of $1,000, and Short Film Script with an award of $500.
