Objective

The "Set in Philadelphia" Screenwriting Competition (SIP), which is presented by the Greater Philadelphia Film Office offers over $20,000 in cash prizes. Screenwriters world-wide are invited to submit an original feature length screenplay or TV pilot length screenplay that COULD be produced in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area. Scripts are judged on their overall quality, and the extent to which they project "shootability" in the Greater Philadelphia region. SIP Finalist Judges are high profile Producers, Writers and Actors.

Submissions must be be delivered by 5:00 PM on deadline, or postmarked by deadline, or electronically time stamped by midnight EST on the deadline.

Rules

  • Screenplay must be able to be produced in the Greater Philadelphia area (includes the surrounding counties).
  • All genres and story-telling approaches are acceptable.
  • You can submit any number of feature length or TV pilot scripts but only ONE entry per application.
  • Feature Length Screenplays must be between 85-130 pages in length and written in standard screenplay format. (i.e. 8.5" x 11" three-hole punch paper with two or three brass brads, if hard copy submission, 12 pt courier font, simple front and back cover, with pages numbered.)
  • Prime Time (TV) scripts should be half-hour or hour long, single-camera pilots, under 70 pages in length written in standard screenplay format. (i.e. 8.5" x 11" three-hole punch paper with two or three brass brads, if hard copy, 12 pt courier font, simple front and back cover, with pages numbered.)
  • A title page, with just the title, must accompany the screenplay. No author identification should appear on this page. Screenplays will be numbered for confidentiality.
  • If there is more than one writer, each must sign the release form for application to be accepted.
  • Screenplays which are currently in production are ineligible.
  • Judges' decisions are final.
  • Entrants can receive notification that their submission was received by emailing a request to joan@film.org after July 22, 2019 for early entries and after August 19, 2019 for final entries.
  • Entrants can receive notification of their screenplay's status in the final round by emailing a request to joan@film.org after November 15, 2019, but finalists will be posted on our site. https://film.org/greater-philadelphia-filmmakers/sip-screenwriting-competition/ by end of Nov.
  • To be eligible for the Arts + Business Council of Greater Philadelphia Regional Award, sponsored by the Arts + Business Council of Greater Philadelphia, entrants must be residents of either Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware or Montgomery counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Mercer or Salem counties in the state of New Jersey or New Castle county in Delaware for the calendar year prior to the July8, 2019 deadline.
  • Entrants applying for the Regional Award are also eligible for the main competition and must provide a legible photocopy of their driver's license, deed or passport as proof of residency.

  • Entrants applying for the Oscar Micheaux Award are also eligible for the main and regional competitions and must provide a signed Micheaux eligibility form and a legible photocopy of their driver's license, deed or passport as proof of residency in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware or Montgomery county.
  • To be eligible for the Student Award, entrants must supply legible photocopy of a current student id & proof of residency. Educational institution or permanent residence must be in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware or Montgomery County. Co-author must meet the same requirements.
  • Entrants applying for the Student Award are also eligible for the Grand, Micheaux and Regional competitions.
  • Screenplays will not be returned; please retain an original copy.
  • Screenplays must be delivered by 5:00 PM on July 8, 2019 or postmarked by July 8, 2019 or electronically time stamped by midnight EST July 8, 2019 for Early Deadline ($50 if paid by check, $52 if paid electronically, includes processing fee). Screenplays must be delivered by 5:00 PM on August 5, 2019 or postmarked by August 5, 2019 or electronically time stamped by midnight EST August 5, 2019 for Final Deadline ($75 if paid by check, $77 if paid electronically, includes processing fee). You have the option of submitting electronically OR with a traditional hard copy. YOUR HARD COPY PACKAGE SHOULD INCLUDE:
  • Your script with author not identified on the cover page
  • Application & Release form
  • Proof of residency, signed Micheaux eligibility form and/or educational institution if applicable
  • Check for application fee payable to “Greater Philadelphia Film Office,” with your screenplay title in the memo line. Mail to: Greater Philadelphia Film Office, Attn: SIP, 1515 Arch Street, 11th Fl. Philadelphia, PA 19102 YOUR ELECTRONIC PACKAGE SHOULD INCLUDE:
  • Your script with author not identified on the cover page
  • Application & Release form (automatically loads when you click to submit electronically)
  • Proof of residency, signed Micheaux form or student ID if applicable
  • Payment via Paypal ($50 + $2 processing fee early, $75 + $2 processing fee final) or send check ($50 early, $75 final) payable to “Greater Philadelphia Film Office,” with NAME OF SCREENPLAY in the memo line via snail mail. All entrants are encouraged to register their screenplay with the Writers’ Guild of America. www.wga.org.
