Scriptapalooza Winner Writes for COMEDY CENTRAL
by Aaron Blitzstein
I heard about Scriptapalooza from a friend at a film production company. I remember him saying that Scriptapalooza was one of the few writing competitions that his company kept tabs on in regard to the winners chosen. Initially, I ignored him the way I do most people but then decided to heed his advice and look it up. I wrote a "Curb Your Enthusiasm" spec, sent it in and didn't think much about it. Who am I kidding? I was on that site every fifteen minutes wondering when they were going to decide! Lo and behold, I began using phrases like "lo and behold," and the winners were posted. I spotted my name on the list of winners and jumped up and down. Alright, not really. We've got neighbors over here. It's bad enough they see me stumble out of the house at noon looking like Tom Waits on a three day bender, I don't want to alert them any more with jumping. The point is I won. I was the winner and was going to State. Hang on, I think I've got that confused with another competition.
What Scriptapalooza did more than anything was legitimize my ability and allow me to walk into meetings saying I had won a writing competition. Shortly after winning I signed with United Talent Agency and landed my first job writing for "Crank Yankers" on Comedy Central.
I can't thank Mark and Genevieve enough for their help. Long live Scriptapalooza...or something like that.
