ScriptapaloozaTV Interviews Contest Winner Angie Comer

Scriptapalooza: How did you come up with your story idea?

A: I am convinced that every small town has a dirty little secret just waiting to come out of the closet. I love the idea of the combination of Comedy and the supernatural. Almost a year ago, I thought I should stop writing for other TV shows that weren't giving me the time of day and create my own Pilot with those elements. I remembered Kim Basinger once owned a town that went bankrupt and then thought about a woman who went on TV and fabricated a story that someone had stolen her winning lottery ticket. I put in the murder mystery with the entire family (that seemed more dramatic and tragic) and some teen characters to grab that demographic, some self-centered adults and the rest equals Mystic Valley.

Scriptapalooza: How long did it take you to write it?

A: I'd say about 3-4 months to complete the entire package.

Scriptapalooza: Is this your first script that you have written?

A: “Mystic Valley” is my fourth TV Pilot and it is my 14th script overall, including 8 features and two short scripts.

Scriptapalooza: Have you entered other screenwriting competitions?

A: Yes.

Scriptapalooza: If so, have you been successful?

A: Yes. In 2002 My Romantic Comedy won the Grand Jury Prize in Screenwriting at the Hollywood Black Film Festival. My short script “Confessions of a Reluctant Bra Buyer” won the 2005 Duke City Shootout Comedy category. I won the opportunity to direct my short and screen it at the festival. My actress won Best Actress at the closing ceremonies. And this script also won 1st Place at the 2003 Organization of Black Screenwriters Short Script Contest and I have been a Semi-Finalist and Quarter-Finalist with the Writer's Network's Competition with my other Rom Com, “How to Date a Celebrity” and my Psychological Thriller, “Hoodwink”.

Scriptapalooza: Why did you enter Scriptapalooza?

A: I consider Scriptapalooza to be the epitome of screenplay competitions. They have an excellent history and offer the opportunity to get your script through doors I could not have possibly imagined. They care about TV and features and are doing their best to get new voices heard.

Scriptapalooza: Advice to other screenwriters?

A: I'd like to quote Sister Sledge from one of my favorite old school songs; “Have faith in you and the things you do and you won't go wrong.”

Scriptapalooza: How did you feel when you saw your name as one of the winners?

A: I thought I had been drinking that night when I saw my name, but remembered I didn't have one drink. I was completely surprised, scared and honored. I checked back the next day to make sure it wasn't a joke.

Scriptapalooza: If you could write for any TV show, which one would it be?

A: It was Six Feet Under. But I will have to find a new one now.
