MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Harvey Jacobs
An interview with screenwriter Harvey Jacobs regarding the Screenplay Search Writing Competition.
Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?A: Family Plots. Two feuding family members each buy a headstone for the same deceased relative and then duke it out over which one is erected.
Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?A: I entered this along with other contests such as Blue Cat because they give feedback. This screenplay also reached the semi-finals of Scriptshark Insider.
Q: Were you satisfied with the administration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?A: They met all of their requirements in a timely, professional and friendly fashion.
Q: How long did it take you to write the script? Did you write an outline beforehand? How many drafts did you write?A: It took me six months and seven drafts. I believe I wrote the first draft, then made an outline and wrote the other drafts from that.
Q: What kind of software did you use to write the script, if any? What other kinds of writing software do you use?A: I use Final Draft for everything.
Q: Do you write every day? How many hours per day?A: Yes. About six hours on various projects.
Q: Do you ever get writer's block? If so, how do you deal with that?A: Sometimes. I either work on a different project for a while or write different scene in the same screenplay, one that I have already worked out.
Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?A: I've written four scripts alone and three with a partner (one of which was optioned). I had a sitcom optioned by BBC TV in London and a short play produced off-Broadway. My writing partner and I wrote and produced "The Hail Mary," a short film and plan to make another -- "Buried Secrets" -- this summer.
Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?A: I live In Los Angeles between Sony and Fox.
Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?A: My partner and I are currently working on a romcom, then on an update of the Cinderella story. I have novelized one of my screenplays and am currently at work writing a spoof disaster story that I hope will be optioned as a movie.
