Objective

MISSION: To provide industry exposure and support to feature screenwriters who are looking to have their stories told.

FEEDBACK: We believe that writers need feedback to improve, which is why we provide the judges’ scorecards to every entrant at no additional charge.

PROMISE: We promise to give all scripts two rounds of scores and there will be a total of six rounds of scores to ensure fairness and transparency.

JUDGING: Our judges are all industry-experienced gatekeepers. The final round of judging will be completed by the best readers, guest jurors, and at least one industry member. Judging will be based on all aspects that make stories great. Budget and marketability will not be considered for this contest.

JURY: Dave Green is the director of Earth to Echo and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Juliet Berman is a Creative Executive at Treehouse Pictures (ALL IS LOST, THAT AWKWARD MOMENT) Le’Ander Nicholson is a literary manager at BelieveLand who signed the 2016 winner Kenlon Clarke. Melissa Azizi is an executive at Pretty Pictures (THE DANISH GIRL, KINSEY)

WeScreenplay Names Contest Winners

Kenlon Clark & William Rubio have been named the Grand Prize Winners of the WeScreenplay Screenwriting Contest for their script, Forged. Novelist Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) was named the second place winner of the blindly-judged competition for his screenplay MESA 1966, along with Paul Gross for his script about Beethoven, Diminuendo. This year's WeScreenplay Competition attracted almost 1,000 submissions.

Screenwriter Robert Rhyne

An interview with screenwriter Robert Rhyne regarding the WeScreenplay Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: “Passing Through” won third prize in the competition. It’s about a doctor who faces dangerous consequences when he falls in love with his female patient – who was also his victim in a hit and run accident.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I believed this script competition was about helping writers get a foothold in the industry. “Passing Through” previously won the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television Screenplay Competition and was a finalist in the Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition, Bluecat Screenplay Competition, and made the quarterfinals of the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.

Q: Were you satisfied with the administration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: The administration of this contest was professional all the way, from entry to follow-up after the win. All of the awards promised were received.

Q: How long did it take you to write the script? Did you write an outline beforehand? How many drafts did you write?

A: The first draft was written in about four months. It was written from a synopsis and then an outline. The draft I entered in this contest was #8 or 9.

Q: What kind of software did you use to write the script, if any? What other kinds of writing software do you use?

A: I used Final Draft software to write this script.

Q: Do you write every day? How many hours per day?

A: I usually write two to three hours per day.

Q: Do you ever get writer's block? If so, how do you deal with that?

A: I do occasionally get writer’s block. I deal with it by putting the current script aside for a few days and working on another script or story, then returning to it with a fresh outlook.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: My background is in urban planning. I’ve written seven other scripts which have won or placed in dozens of screenwriting contests for over 40 awards. I’ve also served as a contest reader and judge for several prominent screenwriting contests.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I live in northern Orange County, about thirty miles from L.A.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I’m currently developing a supernatural thriller with a literary manager.
