Contest News
ScreenCraft Names Comedy Contest winners
After perhaps the most extended deliberations in ScreenCraft’s history, Deerly Beloved by Colin Costello has been selected as the Grand Prize Winner of the 2015 ScreenCraft Comedy Screenplay Contest. It’s an uproarious, high-energy screenplay that centers on an acerbic e-commerce engineer and top wedding blogger who must scramble to right the ship after her much-hyped, televised wedding is “deer-jacked” by a whitetail buck. Though weddings have long been mined for comedy premises, Deerly Beloved succeeds in telling a consistently funny and character-driven story that is all its own.
We’re also proud to highlight Eggs by Averie Storck as the runner-up. In Eggs, a depressed, 35-year-old, borderline infertile teacher desperate to get pregnant finds herself tethered to an aggressive, widowed Department of Natural Resources ranger on her quest to rescue a rare white sturgeon from vicious Russian caviar smugglers, then makes a bid to steal the eggs herself for their supposed fertility powers. It’s an eclectic, unconventional script that pushes the boundaries of the genre.
Both of these scripts exude voice and command of the craft, as do the following finalists that comprise the top ten submissions:
3. Maxed by Deb Hiett
4. Senseless Confidential by Marty Beaudet
5. Somebody To Love by Jay Cipriani
6. Mother Judgers by Heather Kennedy
7. A Meeting In Seville by Paul Mendelson
8. The Choker by Jodyne L. Speyer
9. The Boy Who Had Three Arms by Christian J. Hearn
10. Tina I Love You by Amy Gailey
In addition to the ScreenCraft team, the judges included: Dave Rath, Manager at Generate (clients include Patton Oswalt and Kyle Kinane); Becca Gleason, Director of Development at Smart Girls (production company of Amy Poehler); independent film producer Sean Covel (Napoleon Dynamite, Beneath, Broken Hill); Taylor Benzie, manager at Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment; and Ben Mekler, staff writer at Nerdist Industries.
The Grand Prize winner will receive a $2,000 cash prize and hand-picked industry consultations, while the top five finalists will each receive $200 and feedback, and the top 20 finalists will receive a 1-year subscription to WriterDuet Pro real-time collaborative screenwriting software.
