Call for Screenplay Entries: 8th Annual Rhode Island International Film Festival™

The Rhode Island International Film Festival™ for independent film and video is calling for Screenplay Entries for its 8th annual festival, to take place on August 10-15, 2004 in historic Providence, Rhode Island. RIIFF is accepting screenplays in all genres written after the year 2000. RIIFF is one of 47 festivals worldwide that is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival in the short film category.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2004. Screenplays will be judged by a jury of distinguished panel of industry professionals, educators, peers and film fans. Winners will be announced Labor Day Weekend 2004.

"For our judges, the key elements of a winning screenplay are creativity, innovation, eloquence of vision, originality and the use of language. The key element is that of communication and how it complements and is transformed by the language of film," said George T. Marshall, RIIFF Executive Director.

"We are very impressed by the quality of submitted screenplays," said Tatiana Swancy, director of the RIIFF Screenplay Competition. "We received 217 entries in 2003 from across the globe and are anticipating similar or even better results this year."

The Grand Prize winner will also receive cash and prizes valued at over $10,000. These include the production of segments of the work during Take 1-2-3: Filmmaking with the Pros, RIIFF's annual Master Class on Production which features the participation of a noted industry director (to be held the Summer of 2005); two all access VIP passes to RIIFF 2005; the latest version of software from Final Draft; a subscription to Screenwriter Magazine; promotion through Ink Tip™ (Writer's Script Network), and So You Want to Sell a Script, Inc. Also included are travel, lodging, a full screenplay evaluation, plus an opportunity to work with a noted director, learn about casting, and participate in a public reading of the work.

Top winning contestants of the Competition will also receive Final Draft software and/or copies of Syd Field's Screenwriting Workshop, subscriptions to Screenwriter Magazine, and promotion through both Ink Tip™ (Writer's Script Network), and So You Want to Sell a Script, Inc.

"Our approach with our screenwriters is a bit different from most other competitions," added Marshall. "We actually work with the Grand Prize winner to produce scenes of the top-winning screenplay. We also provide the winner formal recognition at RIIFF's Opening Night Gala, solidifying our respect for this often overlooked discipline."

The Grand Prize winner for 2003 was "The Imperfect Cell" by Lance Hammer of Los Angeles. His screenplay centered on the extraordinary relationship between a young composer and an aging Los Angeles waiter that enables both to face a past steeped in disillusion.
