Objective

The mission of the Screenwriter's Challenge is to discover and support a new wave of talented storytellers from around the world. The Challenge is organized by NYC Midnight Movie Making Madness, LLC. NYC Midnight aims to provide the prizes and exposure necessary for writers to take their next big step towards writing professionally.

Rules

  • Anyone may compete from anywhere in the world.
  • There are 2 rounds.
  • 1st Round (April 16 - 24, 2010) : Writers are placed randomly in heats. Each heat is assigned a genre and a subject (ex. comedy : competing lemonade stands or horror : a family reunion).
  • Writers have 8 days to write an original short screenplay (15 pages max) based on their genre and subject assignment.
  • Winners are chosen from the 1st Round to advance to the 2nd round and compete for over $20,000 in cash and prizes.
  • 2nd Round (June 4 - 5, 2010) : All of the writers receive the same genre and subject at midnight (EST time) and have just 24 hours to write an original short screenplay (15 pages max.).
  • A panel of judges review the final round screenplays and winners are chosen!

NYC Midnight Announces Overall Winners for Screenwriter's Challenge 2007

The overall winners for the 4th Annual Screenwriter's Challenge have been announced. In the first round of the competition, 610 writers were challenged to create original short scripts, no longer than 15 pages, in one week based on a genre and subject assignment. 50 finalists were chosen to advance to the final round to compete for over $13,000 in cash and prizes by writing an original short script in just 24 hours. This year's genre assignment was Sci-Fi and the subject assignment was Trespassing.

The top 10 writers are listed below:

1st Place - "We'll Meet Again Some Day" by Aaron Pease (Arlington, VA, USA)
2nd Place - "Imprint" by Tara Iarusso (Miami Beach, FL, USA)
3rd Place - "Sandman #21" by Lucia Lopez (London, UK)
4th Place - "Turing Test" by Pete Barry (Easton, PA, USA)
5th Place - "Two Worlds" by Kristen Gray (Astoria, NY, USA)
6th Place - "Foiled Again" by Jon Hoffman (Malibu, CA, USA)
7th Place - "The Sentry Officer" by David Fulco (Brooklyn, NY, USA)
8th Place - "The Country Line" by Mark Satterthwaite (Toronto, ON, Canada)
9th Place - "Mindspace" by Carl Gough (London, UK)
