Elio Ruiz (Elio Bernardo-Ruiz), born in Havana, Cuba, is a writer, screenwriter, and awarded filmmaker. He has taken part in noteworthy international film and media endeavors in Cuba as a writer, producer, and director, in Germany as a screenwriter for a period feature-film, in Mexico as a production company owner and crew member, and a C.C.C. film school professor, and in the United States as an actor and film and television project developer. His documentaries have been awarded the “Coral” prize twice in the Latin American International Havana Film Festival, and the “Pitirre” from Cine SanJuan, Puerto Rico.

In 1991, Elio migrated to Mexico where he developed his career in the advertising industry and at artistic educational institutions. In 1995, he received a grant from the Berlin-Brandenburg Film Board, Germany; and in 1997, he received a grant from the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) to both research and write about a lesser-known 19th Century Afro-Cuban violin virtuoso, Claudio Brindis de Salas, a story he staged in 1987 as an experimental theater approach, and the Mexican one for screenwriting on the Caribbean history and scenario seem like the real cradle of the Americas. His short story, “The Little White Girl” was included in the collection, Ancestral House: The Black short stories in the Americas and Europe, published in the United States in 1995. He has frequently collaborated with Vanderbilt University’s Afro-Hispanic Review in which both his essays and narrative pieces have been published.
