IF A MONSTER COMES

If a Monster Comes is a beautiful character piece based on a true story and set in a time of heroes and courage during World War II. It tells the story of 10 year-old T.C. Phillips’ stormy relationship with his father, Roy, who tries to teach his son courage, does not come from pulling the trigger of a gun. In his younger wilder years, Roy was once sent to prison for killing a man but he is now the respected Mayor of a small Texas boarder town poised on the brink of receiving an invasion of 8,000 German Prisoners of War to be housed in the Army’s Enemy Interment Camp located in town. This timeless story deals with the fear and the courage of a father and a son and the people of the town who must overcome their hatred for the Germans in order to learn to trust again to survive. Post Script: I lived in Dallas, TX and when I read an article about this town., I went there and spent a good deal of time there interviewing people who had lived through this era. Everyone told me their stories through their eyes. Some were only children then, others prison guards at the interment camp, but they all remembered one thing; the fear and the hatred they felt for the Germans. Out of all my screenplays, I loved writing this one the most. The script is a beautiful read in the style of To Kill a Mockingbird. At one point a producer from Hallmark Hall of Fame Movies considered this project.
