Objective

The Writers Lab, produced by IRIS and New York Women in Film & Television and supported by Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, is open for submissions of screenplays by women over the age of 40

ABOUT THE LAB

The Writers Lab brings 12 women screenwriters over the age of 40 with promising scripts together with outstanding professional female filmmakers for an intensive four-day screenwriting development retreat of one-on-one meetings, panel discussions and other activities designed to inspire the artists; to prompt rigorous creative exploration; and, through revision, to cultivate first-rate cinematic stories.

We seek a broad selection of screenplays across all genres of fiction. Scripts by more than one writer will be considered, but all writers must be female, and only one writer can attend the Lab. Show More

Deadline/Entry Fees

Expired. Previous Deadline: 04/30/2026

Eligibility

Female US citizens over 40 years old

Rules

For The Writers Lab (U.S. / International flagship), the age cutoff is tied to being at least 40 years old by the first day of the Lab you’re applying to attend — meaning you must be born on or before the date that makes you 40 by that start date.

Please see website for complete rules and guidelines.

Awards

  • Individualized feedback, insights and guidance on their selected projects and their craft;
  • Understanding of industry standards, practices, expectations and predilections, and strategies and resources for navigating them;
  • A community of peers and a network of relationships that can extend well beyond the program;
  • Exposure and opportunities beyond the Lab, as well as the resources and year-round supplemental programming of The Writers Lab.
The Lab aims to build skills, confidence and community, and to prepare writers for collaborative work and market demands.
