Objective

The Slamdance Screenplay Competition is dedicated to discovering and nurturing emerging screenwriters. Since 1997, the competition has established a strong track record for introducing writers to members of the entertainment industry who have gone on to produce, option, and represent submitted work. Like the Film Festival, the Screenplay Competition is a place for new, bold, and raw voices. We are looking for scripts that take risks, refuse compromise, and go places where Hollywood hacks fear to tread.

Recent success stories include Tyler Tice, whose 2018 Grand Prize-winning horror feature Day Shift was released in 2022 as a Netflix original film starring Jamie Foxx. Day Shift became the most watched film in the world during the third week of August 2022. Show More

Slamdance Skyline Screenplay Award Winner Announcement at IFP

Slamdance and Andrew Lauren Productions announced the winner of the Skyline Screenplay Award for the best story set in a metropolitan city at a staged reading performed by the Theater for the New City. Andrew B. Smith took the top prize for his work, “Hay’s Code,” an ensemble comedy about a gay director in 1934 Hollywood who must make a gay movie without revealing the film's true content or, naturally, his own sexuality. An after party followed the reading at the Lit Lounge, sponsored by Stella Artois.

“While many prohibitions of the Hays Code seem ridiculous today, its intolerance of homosexuals is more relevant than ever... To get belly laughs, you have to go for the throat,” says Skyline Screenwriting Award Winner Andrew B. Smith.

Members of the Theater for the New City, including director Lissa Moira and Executive Director of the theater, Crystal Field, read the work of the top three finalists for the Skyline Screenplay Award for Best City Story, and Andrew Lauren Productions Chairmen & CEO, Andrew Lauren, was on hand for the culmination of the ceremony to present the winner with a $1,000 check, Final Draft Pro screenwriting software and a subscription to Scr(i)pt Magazine.

“The staged reading proved to be ideal for Andrew Lauren Productions and Slamdance to showcase the work of three talented new screenwriters with the help of a passionate New York theater group for an audience of IFP market-goers,” says competition Director John Stoddard.

“We are proud to work with Slamdance in an effort to recognize new and exciting voices in screenwriting,” adds Andrew Lauren.

The 2006 Slamdance Film Festival will be held in Park City, Utah January 19-27, 2006. Slamdance has successfully established year-round ventures including the Screenplay Competition, Best Of Screenings in the U.S., Festival events in China and Poland, the Anarchy Online Film competition, the Dirty Dozen DVD Series (currently in its 7th volume), and short film productions dubbed $99 Specials. In 2004, Slamdance launched a teleplay competition in conjunction with fox21, a Games Competition, and the Slamdance Media Group; a company comprised of distribution and talent-management units

Andrew Lauren Productions is an independent film production company based in New York City. Their first feature, G, starring Richard T. Jones (Collateral), Blair Underwood (Madea’s Family Reunion) and Andre Royo (HBO’s The Wire) opened in limited release on September 16th, and rolls out nationally in late October. They also executive produced Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale starring Jeff Daniels (Pleasantville), Laura Linney (Mystic River) and Jessie Eisenberg (Roger Dodger), which opens in select theaters October 5th.
