Objective
The Slamdance Screenplay Competition is dedicated to discovering and nurturing emerging screenwriters. Since 1997, the competition has established a strong track record for introducing writers to members of the entertainment industry who have gone on to produce, option, and represent submitted work. Like the Film Festival, the Screenplay Competition is a place for new, bold, and raw voices. We are looking for scripts that take risks, refuse compromise, and go places where Hollywood hacks fear to tread.
Recent success stories include Tyler Tice, whose 2018 Grand Prize-winning horror feature Day Shift was released in 2022 as a Netflix original film starring Jamie Foxx. Day Shift became the most watched film in the world during the third week of August 2022. Show More

Every entrant will receive short feedback from one of our readers. It will include a genre suggestion, a logline, and a paragraph outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your screenplay. The goal of the feedback is to provide you with short & sweet constructive criticism of your work.

- A total of $18,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winners this year.
- The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 in cash.
- The winners of the Feature, Horror, TV Pilot, and Short categories will each receive $2,000 in cash.
- The top three screenwriters in each category will receive prize packages that include Festival Passes good for all screenings and parties at the next Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah
- The winning Horror and Feature screenplays will receive $5,000 in legal services from Pierce Law Group, LLP.
- The top three screenwriters in each category will be included in the upcoming Slamdance Film Festival program which is distributed to industry professionals in Park City and year round.
- One entry from the competition will be awarded the Slamdance Screenplay Mentorship Award, consisting of personal mentorship through Slamdance's alumni network and screenwriting consultants. This includes an in-depth coverage report, an action plan for next draft development, further review of subsequent drafts, support in preparing a pitch deck, and best efforts in helping get the finished work produced through Slamdance's alumni network.

Slamdance Announces 5th Annual Screenplay Competition Winners
LOS ANGELES The Slamdance Film Festival is pleased to announce the winners of the 5th Annual Slamdance Screenplay Competition. The top three awards - which include cash prizes and Screenplay.com software packages - are as follows: 1st place: "Gotta Keep Movin" by Russell Paquette; 2nd place: "Tokens" by Thomas Russell; 3rd place: "Lemon Grove" by David Guest.
"Gotta Keep Movin" is the Citizen Kane-like retelling of the life of legendary blues musician Robert Johnson recounted to a New York City music scout searching for him to play Carnegie Hall.
Slamdance also awarded three scripts with a Recognition of Excellence: "Dust" by Sherie Yang, "Killing The People Upstairs" by Bruce Griffiths and "The Children¹s Garden" by Brett Merryman.
"The winners were chosen from an especially eclectic batch of screenplays. This year's top twelve is by far the best yet," said Director of the Screenplay Competition, Larry D. Hansen "Our competition continues to attract the best young writers due to increased popularity of the Slamdance Film Festival, greater presence on the World Wide Web, and the success of past winners."
The 2000 competition also recognized six finalists (in alphabetical order): "The Black Gun" by Eric Marks, "Displaced Persons" by Sophia Heller, "The Fairy Key" by Robert Hamilton, "The Lyster Theory" by Nelson
McCormick, "The Nature of Sex" by Cindy Davis Hewitt, and "You Down With The O.C.D." by Stephen Falk.
"While scripts were mostly from new American writers, participating screenwriters submitted work from as far away as England, Ireland, Norway, Germany and Australia," added Hansen.

The mission of the competition is to recognize and promote new talent. Each year Slamdance helps a greater number of its screenplay entrants find success. Brent Studler¹s "The Rape of Marta Alastor" which placed 3rd in our 1999 screenplay competition - as well as one other screenplay of his - were recently optioned by separate independent film producers. Tim Boughn's 1999 Recognition of Excellence screenplay, "Neo Ned" has been optioned by independent director/producer, Van Fischer - whose feature film BLINK OF AN EYE played in competition at the 2000 Slamdance Film Festival.
1998's 6th placed screenplay, "Fair Hope, USA" penned by Anthony Di Piertro having just gone into pre-production with Barry Katz Entertainment Group. Jay Mohr is attached as the lead and Anthony Di Piertro is slated to direct. Barry Katz and Brian Volk-Weiss are producing. Also from the 1998 Competition, winner Kate Alfieri signed with ICM. Trevor Munson's script "Road to Hell" was optioned by Ed Zwick's company, Bedford Falls, and Munson has been hired to write a TV movie for Fox. And finalist T.S. Faul signed with Zide Management. 1997¹s winner, "Chinaware-Fragile," by Christine Desmet, Robert Shill and Peggy Williams, was optioned by New Line Cinema.
A unique feature of the Slamdance Screenplay Competition is that writers of all submissions are invited to call the Slamdance offices to get constructive feedback on their work. Those writers who are interested should call (323) 466-1786 weekdays from September 26 - October 20th, 2000, from 10:00am - 5:00pm PST.
Slamdance will award $2,000 in cash to the 1st-place winner of the 2000 Screenplay Competition, as well as $1,000 to the 2nd-place winner and $500 to the 3rd-place winner. All twelve recognized screenplays and their writers will receive introductions to studios, production companies and agencies as well as software from Screenplay.com and the opportunity to be listed on the Writer¹s Script Network for a full year. The awards will be presented at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, which runs from January 20th through 27th, 2001. During the festival, Slamdance will hold a screenwriter Fireside Chat and other informal get-togethers related to the Screenplay Competition.
The initial deadline for the 2001 Screenplay Competition is March 1, 2001.
