Karyn Usher Accepts Screenplay Award at Ohio Independent Film Fest
November 3, 1999. The 1999 Ohio Independent Film Festival & Market kicked off with a bang! On
Monday, November 1, award-winning Producer/Director Mark Archer (In the
Company of Men and American Reel with David Carradine, Mariel Hemingway,
Michael Maloney), and Ohio Independent Co-Directors Annetta Marion and
Bernadette Gillota were guests on Around Noon with Dee Perry (90.3 WCPN) to
talk about the festival and Archer's Hollywood Screen Actors Workshop this
Saturday and Sunday.
Yesterday, our first ever Ohio Independent Film
Festival T-shirts (black, long sleeved, very cool) were unveiled. Get yours
before we sell out!
Also yesterday, Karyn Usher, winner of the Best
Northcoast Screenplay Award, flew in from California to attend Script Mill
and watch the presentation of her award-winning screenplay Small Things
Considered. Chris Carmody (Greater Cleveland Media Development Corporation)
presented Usher her $1,000 prize check. Says Ms. Usher, "This was a totally
excellent opportunity for a writer to see her work come to life with real
actors and real directing... The Ohio Independent and their staff did an
amazing job, the reading was incredibly well cast. I'm so happy to be here!"
A full house, despite the inclimate weather, showed up to watch Script Mill.
Spotted in the crowd were filmmaker Jefferson Beck, OISA readers, Mike
Allen, Matt Bartel, Denis Griesmer (who also directed Script Mill), Charlotte
Mann, Christine Panozzo, Adrienne Russ, Steve Smith, and Dave Vidovich, OISA
finalist Tim Tyler, journalists Charles Cassady (The Cleveland Free Times,
The Lorain Morning Journal) and Tim Piai (cleveland.citysearch.com), film
professionals Kate Amer, Jim Gelarden, and Scott Swank, and Greater Cleveland
Media Development Vice President Trish Lynch. After Script Mill, the OISA
readers enjoyed a reception sponsored by Grumpy's Café and Bakery in Tremont.
Today, we welcome the Screen Actors Guild angel Kit Woods as a part of our
Independent Film School, and filmmakers, Thomas Baumann (Bottom Feeders),
Olga and Loren Kruse ("Already Met"), Bill Hoffman, Randall and Kathy Brown
("Even You"), Mark Evans ("Goodnight Miss July"), Josh Wick ("Crossroads").
Also today, our audience will be treated to the premiere "Something for
Everyone," a short film which will start every program this festival.
"Something for Everyone" was shot last year in conjunction with our acclaimed
Film Production Training Program (in collaboration last year with Greater
Cleveland Media Development Corporation).
