Dive Into This Year's Ohio Independent Film Festival
Dive Into This Year's Ohio Independent Film Festival & Market for Film, Fun,
and Educational Programs
Between November 5th and 12th, the Ohio Independent Film Festival makes a
splash with its wide range of programs and workshops devoted to the creation
and exhibition of independent media art. In this weeklong celebration of all
things film, you can attend seminars with established moviemakers, free
programs on important issues, and events that foster the growth of our local
film community.
Founded in 1993 by co-directors Annetta Marion and Bernadette Gillota, the
Ohio Independent Film Festival exhibits work completed in a variety of media.
Programming typically includes collections of short films, animation, and
features that are world or Ohio premieres. This year's programming includes:
- Script Mill, an unstaged screenplay reading-one of the prizes of the Ohio
Independent Screenplay Awards, is modeled after the Nuyorican Poets Cafe's
Fifth Night Series in New York City. Screenplay readings are "movies in your
imagination." They are raw and unstaged performances, but professionally
directed and cast. Guided by a narrator, these readings are an important and
innovative tool for screenwriters to road test a screenplay's dialogue and
timing in front of a live audience. Tuesday, 7 November 8p.
- FREE special film program: "Conscience and the Constitution," an Ohio
premiere (before it is broadcast by PBS) produced by Frank Abe. A panel
discussion after the film with the participation Mr. Abe and the Japanese
American Citizens League (JACL) Cleveland Chapter's Speakers Bureau
Chairperson Ed Ezaki
with his committee members, follow by a reception. Scheduled for Wednesday, 8
November 6p.
- Ohio Day, a full day of films from Ohio filmmakers, the only day where
all-Ohio films and shorts are shown from start to finish. Thursday, 9
November, starting at 9a.
- FREE special film program: "Will to Read: Estel Sizemore's story." A
literacy program that depicts the personal story of Cincinnatian Estel
Sizemore, who is no stranger to those who have seen literacy-related programs
and public service messages for the past 10 years. Sizemore only learned to
read in his mid-50s, and since has become the tri-state "literacy ambassador"
appearing on national news programs and talk shows, being honored by the
White House and telling his story to area schools, services groups and
business gatherings. (This event is scheduled for Saturday, November 11,
starting at 5pm with a panel discussion including Richard Peterson, Director,
Project Learn; Vivian C. Riccio, Executive Director, Esperanza, Inc.; and
Catherine Thomas, Director, Cleveland Reads, a program of United Way
Services, moderated by Courtney DeOreo and reception afterward.)
- Independent Film School scheduled for November 11th and 12th, Saturday and
Sunday mornings (from 9am to 1pm). Attend the workshop on Assistant Directing
with New Yorker Paul Epstein at the Cleveland Public Theatre at 6415 Detroit
Avenue. Mr. Epstein is a professional Assistant Director, working mainly in
independent film. He has been the 1st AD on ten feature films, including
"Never Again," directed by Eric Schaeffer and starring Jeffrey Tambor, Jill
Clayburgh, and Bill Duke, and "Directing Eddie," directed by Laurence Kaldor,
with Jaid Barrymore and Valerie Perreine.
- Premiere of Cleveland's first Hispanic director's film: "Alvarez and Cruz."
A full-length feature produced by Brick City21/Tostado Prods. Co-Directed
by Vince Lozano, Alex D'Lerma aka Alex Tostado Groove 103.1, and Paul
Maggetti.
- Cindy Penter hosted the Guest Curator Program that is slated for Sunday,
November 12 at 5pm. The program depicts series of experimental films.
Many other programs will be tailored to diversity interests, and you can
visit the Ohio Independent Film Festival's website at
http://www.ohiofilms.com for detail on film schedules and listings, you can
also download flyers and watch online the OIFF Highlights video clip.
The 2000 Ohio Independent Film Festival and Market continues to be an
incredible resource to the local film community, with ongoing support from
Cleveland businesses and organizations Dive in to the festival and enjoy a
full week of educational, entertaining, and inspirational multimedia
experiences.
