Island Games chosen for EU Media II Euroscript Development
Island Games, described as a "Hugh Grant-type romantic comedy", by Who's
Buying What subscriber Brendan Foley, has been chosen for development by
Euroscript for MEDIA II, the European Union's government-sponsored film
development program.
The deal includes up to six months of script development time and funding,
followed by the resulting draft being promoted by Media II to production
companies and studios as well as through its own resources. In return, the
script and any subsequent film will credit MEDIA II and Euroscript.
Details of the plot are being kept under wraps, but the script is described
as "a funny, very visual, international battle of the sexes", set in London
and Italy.
Foley says he hopes the European development news will be a springboard for
Hollywood interest. "My aim is to make a romantic comedy cabable of making
people laugh and cheer whether they are in Los Angeles, London or Milan."
"Romantic comedies do not always translate well around the world, as those
driven mainly by smartass dialog often founder in translation. This is very
visually driven. My own outlook is much more U.S. than Euro-auteur, and I
hope this will become a mainstream movie that shows the capacity for
European style and American story-telling to meet in a funny, mainstream
success."
Foley, previously an award-winning international features journalist who has
worked in 55 countries covering business and conflict, is a recent convert
to screenwriting. His first script, The Rising co-written with LA
screenwriter Shelly Goldstein was a $1000 finalist in the Australian
International Screenwriting Contest 2000. The Rising is a historical drama
about the Irish Easter Uprising set in 1916 Dublin, described as "Greens - a
sort of Irish Reds."
