Contest News

Local Screenwriter Nancy Raven Smith is accepted to The Broad Humor Festival in Venice, California

Local screenwriter Nancy Raven Smith has been accepted to The Broad Humor Film Festival in Venice, California from August 24-26. This one-of-a-kind annual event is the first and only festival to put the spotlight on women telling funny stories through films.

Nancy Raven Smith grew up in the Virginia horse country, where she ran horse sport events and wrote articles and cartoons for several sports magazines. Upon moving to California, she transferred her event experience to film production. While working on film and TV projects, she discovered a passion for screenwriting and studied at UCLA. Raven Smith's screenplays have won numerous awards and recognition from competitions such as Slamdance, the Disney Fellowship (top 7) and Worldfest. Her latest screenplay, "HORSING AROUND," draws upon her equestrian experience, quirky farm life and the humorous early years of her marriage. Currently, Raven Smith lives in Los Angeles with her husband.

The festival is the brainchild of Susan di Rende, herself a director and writer of comedies. She explains that she was "surprised to learn that there are no festivals celebrating funny female filmmakers." So, she says, she and her associate Kaat Cleenewerck decided to "broadly go where no broad has gone before and start our own." This year's festival will highlight 21 films over three days and includes screenwriting competitions in five comic categories. In addition, alumnae are included in screenings via the festival's Legacy Project. This laughter-filled, feel good festival was featured as one of five niche festivals in MovieMaker Magazine.
