Objective

The Vail Screenplay Competition is a vehicle for aspiring screenwriters to have their scripts recommended to established film producers, managers, and agents who are actively working at the top level of the film industry.

The Vail Screenplay Competition is a signature program of the Colorado Film Institute, producer of the annual Vail Film Festival, now entering its 19th year. The Colorado Film Institute is a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization, supported by sponsorships, donors, and grants, including support from Colorado Creative Industries and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The top finalist screenplays will be judged by the following industry executives: FEATURE SCREENPLAY FINALIST JURY
  • Rachel Crouch, Director of Development at Cold Iron Pictures
  • Munika Lay, Vice President, Film at Miramax
  • Josh Marks, Manager at Untitled Entertainment
  • Ashleigh Snead, Partner, Paper Street Pictures
  • Beau Ward, Director of Development at LD Entertainment
TELEVISION PILOT FINALIST JURY
  • Alex Goldstone, Partner, Anonymous Content
  • Adam Kassen, Producer (Shed Media, Warner Brothers)
  • Amanda Klein, Producer (Former SVP, Television at Miramax)
The 1st place Feature Screenplay will be read by established film producers and talent agents, and the 1st place TV Pilot will be read by leading television producers. 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place feature, short, and television screenplay winners will be included in a national press release, and will have their scripts recommended to key decision-makers at leading entertainment companies. All top placing screenplays will also be listed on the Vail Film Festival website as the top placements of the 2022 Vail Screenplay Competition. All semifinalists will have their scripts listed on the Vail Film Festival website.

Vail Film Festival Announces Screenplay Contest Winners

Mike Bencivenga's Running Gun has been named the winner of the Vail Film Festival Screenwriting Competition.

Feature Winners

1st Place:
Running Gun, written by Mike Bencivenga
A promising young man has his future destroyed when he befriends a troubled teenage runaway. The year is 1877. The troubled teenager is Billy the Kid. RUNNING GUN is a story of romance, redemption and revenge and the truest telling yet of the life of the notorious boy bandit king.


2nd Place:
Horror Comic, written by Stephen Hoover
In the 1950s the greatest threat to the United States is not global Communist expansion or nuclear annihilation. It's comic books.


3rd Place:
Tranquility Base, written by Daniel Turkewitz
Tranquility Base is the story of astronauts stranded in space in 2040. The action moves between the International Space Station, a Space Transport Plane, and a Moon Base Biosphere, as 15 astronauts struggle to secure spots in the self-sustaining environment of a Moon Base that can only support six people.


Shorts Winners

1st Place:
Crossbar Hotel, written by Karrie Crouse
Crossbar Hotel tells the story of Cline Jones, a jittery, heavily tattooed man returning home to his sleepy North Carolina town after serving two years at a prison work farm. Upon his return, Cline must reunite with his eight-year-old son, Ray, all the while struggling to keep his nerves and temper under control.


2nd Place:
The Models NRT, written by Joseph Medina
In a future completely controlled by machines, there are certain models designed to nurture. For these models are farms that harvest real human children for them to raise and fulfill their programming. But at age ten, they are to put down their kids in order to prevent any future uprising. Will androids David and Maria be able to go against their programming to nurture and kill their ten year old son?


3rd Place:
The Stranger's Room, written by Shan Cleland
Someone is murdering the women of Paradise Road. During a rainstorm a mysterious stranger knocks on the door of a young mothers house on the Paradise Road and she gives him shelter. Will she pay with her life?
