American Gem Announces Contest Winners

American Gem and The Write Brothers have announce the Winners of the 2006 American Gem Short Screenplay Competition:

First Place Winner - Michael Ugulini
PARCHED — Drama


Logline: A farmer defends his dying field during a prolonged drought.



Second Place Winner - Hyemin Koo
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN CALM AND PASSION — Drama


Logline: A nerdy high-school senior falls in love a month before the Harvard application deadline and learns in a twisted way the bitter lesson of the balance between calm and passion. A satire about the college admissions process.



Third Place Winner - Jason N. Zimmatore
TABLOID — Thriller


Logline: A sleazy tabloid reporter, who takes photos of celebrities on their deathbeds, gets his comeuppance at the hand of an aging TV tough guy.



Fourth Place Winner - Alexandra Torterotot
BY THE HAND — Drama


Logline: AElijah, a young 8-year-old boy becomes friends with Malaika, an elderly homeless woman in order to avoid going home to his estranged mother.

Fifth Place Winner - Musa Jackson
THE GARDNER — Drama


Logline: As new wealth and prosperity helps Harlem rise up from urban decay. One its long standing residents, a beloved elderly Harlem widow wrought with Alzheimer's descends into dementia as she waits for her grandson the doctor to rescue her.



Sixth Place Winner - Kent Young
COOKIES — Drama/Comedy


Logline: Fresh out of rehab, Samantha can't seem to hang on to anything. As the sober lifestyle quickly loses luster, she begins to push its boundaries, and finds herself reconnecting with someone from her dark past.



Seventh Place Winner - Meredith Rose
UNBROKEN FALL — Drama/War


Logline: AU.S. Army Captain Gabby Davis has worked hard to get to where she is. Now she has to use all her wits, imagination and years of training to navigate her platoon through hard lessons about honor and friendship, prejudice and trust, love, loss and betrayal, and, oh yeah, there's a war going on out there, too.



Eighth Place Winner - Douglas Stark
NIGHT — Supernatural


Logline: A newcomer to a senior facility meets residents crippled not only with the fear of dying, but a shadowy spirit who is stealing their souls.

Ninth Place Winner - Diana Kemp-Jones
VOYEUR — Film Noir


Logline: A loner dominated by his voyeuristic appetites descends into murder and madness.



Tenth Place Winner - Lawrence Whiteside
AUTOMATA — Drama


Logline: A toy-maker is asked to make a mechanical sister for a little girl. He will find out the girl's father has more in mind for the toy than a companion for a lonely girl.
