Waterfront Film Festival Announces Contest Results

Mike McGeever has been announced as the winner of the Waterfront Film Festival Screenwriting Competition for his comedy, Smilers.

Winner:

SMILERS, by Mike McGeever

Mike is a native of the Chicago area, and received his bachelor's in accounting from the University of Illinois and his master's in computer science from Northern Illinois University. Sensing an untapped market for comedies about accountants, Mike wrote his first screenplay, "SMILERS" -- a romantic comedy about a cynical accountant who falls in love with the head of the company he's been hired to audit.

Finalists:

THE BEND, by Benjamin Fingerhut

Benjamin Fingerhut was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, and now lives in Chicago, Illinois. He has Writing degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Inspired by films like Breaking Away, Raising Arizona, and Bottle Rocket, he and his twin brother, Geoffrey, started a production company, Chump Change Productions, and began making short films. Benjamin’s first feature, Down into Happiness, placed 2nd in the 72 Hour Feature Project. "THE BEND" is a comedy about a group of bumbling friends who attempt to kidnap the mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

BEAUTIFUL LOSER, by Jeremy Howe

Jeremy Howe was born and raised in Kalamazoo, MI. and studied film at Grand Valley State University. Following an internship at THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS in Los Angeles, Jeremy most recently worked on the CBS sitcom OUT OF PRACTICE, which stars Henry Winkler, Stockard Channing and Jennifer Tilly. "BEAUTIFUL LOSER" is a drama about a soon-to-be-laid-off factory worker who reexamines his life after a chance encounter with Bob Seger.

Semifinalists:

Evakay Favia & Sue Favia Beck (A CYNIC’S GUIDE TO GOD), former Chicago-area residents who attended school in Morgan Park, IL

Jeremy D Mayer (A WAR IN THE MIND OF GOD), formerly taught at Kalamazoo College

Frederick Mensch (OUR TOWN) Illinois native, current resident of Palatine, IL and founder of Moviebytes.com
